What Was Your Favorite 2D Beat-Em Up Game/Series? And I don't mean fighting games, different genre. I mean the games where you play a 2D, side-scrolling game where you go around and beat-up tons of minions/henchmen and finish a level fighting a boss. Or some sort of variation of that formula. There were a ton of these made during 80s arcade era and the height of the 16-bit era. Some of the more popular series include Final Fight, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, TMNT, X-Men, Spider-Man, Golden Axe, etc. My favorite goes to the Marvel series of beat-em ups during the 16-bit era. Namely Marvel Super-Heroes: War of the Gems, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, X-Men 2: The Clone Wars, Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage, Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety, and The Punisher. Those were all awesome games that I spent many hours of my adolescent years on. Lots of fun and great graphics for that era on all of those. Marvel Super-Heroes: War of the Gems was especially interesting in that it incorporated fighting-game type special moves into it's move-sets yet was was a beat-em up.

I loved the Streets of Rage games, and I also loved the Turtles games. Turtles in Time always gets talked about, but I think the true gem in the series is Hyperstone Heist. It's so underrated, nobody ever talks about it, and yet I felt it was superior to TiT in pretty much every way

Hands down, Final Fight and Streets of Rage. Also the old TMNT beat em ups were great as well, along side Golden Axe and Knights of the round. I could name so much more but ill leave it at that. I think old 2d beat em ups are my favorite genre.

Most of the top ones have been mentioned, but I am gonna throw in Crude Busters / Two Crude Dudes (Arcade); Altered Beast, Batman Returns (SNES), Moonwalker (Arcade). Capcom and Konami are the lords of this genre. Most recently though Viewtiful Joe and Godhand have been lot of fun. Anyone remember the hype around Fighting Force for the PS?

I loved Fighting Force. The only complaint I had about it was that it was far too short of a game. I remember the gaming magazines back then hated it, though.

Not saying the games are great, but every time I think of the genre the Double Dragon games on NES come to mind. Especially Double Dragon II. When I was 7 years old I thought it was the most bad ass game on Earth.

I hear you brother, although I was a Commodore man I had friends that played the old 48k Spectrum. One of my favorites must be Target renegade for the C64.

Also Altered beast on the Genesis (It never came to the arcades where I'm from) Also Golden Axe (This one I played the Arcade version of). I like Double Dragon (NES), Fist II, Final fight (Arcade)and New York Warriors (Amiga).
