What were the first FPS to use certain game-play elements that are now common in today's first person shooters?

1. First use of 3D environments?

2. First use of 3D models?

3. First use of iron sights?

4. First use of charactors that fight on your side?

5. First use of a scoped weapon, the birth of sniping?

6. First use of a modern setting?

7. First use of reloading?

8. First use of squad controls?

9. First use of muliplayer?

10. First use of objective based muliplayer? i.e. beyond deathmatch and team deathmatch

11. First use of vehicles?

First use of anything else thats out there now.

I don't know. I just thought I would post into something that isn't a 'top 5' or 'what's your favorite' topic for a change.

OK I done some homework.

The first use of proper 3d levels into a 1st person shooter was not actually Quake. But Terminator Future shock. We mean proper 3d, as in room over room. Games like Doom and duke nukem were just walls and ceilings.

I believe the first sniper FPS was Midwinter for the Amiga, which featured a scope. Half life was definitely the first to introduce companions.

The first use of reloading. Virtual Cop probably :D but if light gun games don't count then... I can only think of half life being the first proper FPS game that featured a reload gun key, complete with proper animation.

Terminator Future Shock had vehicles, I think it may have been the first to do so but Dark Forces had 3D environments, room over room and was months earlier.

Ok, then, System Shock (1994). Perfect Dark (2000) wasn't first in that regard by a long shot.

All of these answers are Faceball 2000 for the Gameboy, which was proclaimed the first modern FPS.

Hmm... Faceball 2000.... Never heard of it, sadly :(. I just looked on wikipedia what it's like. Would downloading a ROM of the game be illegal? Or can I do it to see what it's like?

Not too good? WTF? What control scheme with the same standard gameplay elements was better then? For me everything about the control scheme in halo was great. That's one of the reasons every other modern fps has likewise controls.

Only if you're referring to light gun games or some other genre. Wolfenstein WAS the first FPS.

No. What about Catacomb 3d?? and many others 80´s could be considered FPS. Maze war for example

...and then there were games like Ultima Underworld, which was released just before Wolf3D but was far more technically advanced. It was more of an action-RPG than a shooter, but it was essentially the same thing.

No, I'm fairly certain that games like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior had reloading long before Goldeneye.

I think Goldeneye's innovation was locational damage (headshots, groinshots, etc).

Oh, come on: now Jedi Knight doesn't count as an FPS because it has switchable cameras? It defined the 3D FPS genre.

Jedi Knight was the absolute bomb. That game did so many things right. And yes, of course it was first-person shooter. :)

No, was barely good then, it won't be fun now. Even if you found four copies and 4-wayed your Game Boys with three friends.

I never knew Faceball 2000 had inspiration, the only reason I rented it was because Nintendo Power hyped it up.

I want to know what the first FPS with a story as a central part of the game was...
