This is a thread written out of curiosity. What, in your opinion, will be the next "megagame" that has a chance of surpassing the astounding sales figures of Halo 3 or getting the same amount of attention? As a second question, what is your most anticipated upcoming release (for '07) or favorite game thusfar for the year?

Find another game with a rabid fanbase and a producer willing to bribe all the reviewers and maybe you'll have your game.

Personally, I'm glad the series is over. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, deserves that level of hype.

Quite frankly, I don't think there will ever be another game, not in the next decade anyways, that even matches the sales figure on opening day of sales the way Halo 3 did. About the only game that comes to mind at the moment that will get the type of hype that Halo 3 got, and possibly come somewhat close to Halo 3 release sales figures would have to be Madden 09. Every year the Madden release gets bigger and bigger, and I don't forsee it going downhill anytime soon.

Quality wise HL2 Orange Box will sell alot and people will see what howHL2 was supposed to be played instead of the watered down port xbox version. Though its worth noting that HL2 sold millions, its too bad most of the content has been released, that will prevent the game for being a strong GOTY contender.

Yeah Team Fortress 2 may be able to challenge Halo 3 in terms of being an online arcade FPS, and COD4 I think will sport this year's best console online multiplayer, tho it may be unfair to compare the game to Halo.

Halo 4. :P

Honestly I don't know but I think Starcraft 2 or the next World of Warcraft expansion pack probably have the best shots at it right now.

Yeah, the main one I've been thinking of is the next WoW expansion, but even that's questionable. I don't know about SC2, mainly due to the fact that the series has been on hiatus for such a long time. No matter, I'm still looking forward to that one. :-D

amen to that

i think anything can challenge the halo series, in my opinion it is not the best series, they r all the same and noting new ever comes out in any of them. wow except that u can carry 2 guns and drive new vehicles, so whats big whoop. halo is the most overrated game of all time, and i mean of all time. they shouldnt even make a story mode for it cuz no one plays that, they should just call it halo online cuz thats all people bought it for. but like i said anything can challenge halo, the biggest ones r gears of war, metal gear, and god of war. i think those r the some of the best i have ever played

There's absolutely nothing out there that will be able to match Halo's level of hype, but critically and commercially, I think Super Mario Galaxy and Grand Theft Auto IV have a very good chance of surpassing Halo 3.

I haven't actually played Gears of War yet. I'd like to, seeing as how I've read so many positive things about it. I, myself, am not the biggest Halo fan. I liked Combat Evolved, but then my interest waned with the second one due to the strong "been there, done that" feeling I got. I can't discredit Microsoft, though. They've done a great job promoting this game. Seeing as how I haven't played the third one, I have to reserve my judgments. Maybe one day I'll get around to playing and see if it comes close to matching this hype. I can give a fair assessment at that point.

Ah, GTA IV. How did that slip my mind? Well, we can be sure that it'll be opening to quite the nice sized audience. :-)

actually when u come to think about it lots of games have passed the level of halo, even the commercial hype of halo, perfect example... resident evil. no matter how stupid u thought the movies were that game is in my opinion even bigger then halo cuz that is the only game turned to movie to ever see a trilogy. but dont get me wrong halo is a good game but it doesnt play like something different. it feels like ur every first person shooter. i dunno how it got so hyped n e wayz... gears is soo good simply cuz of the things that u have to do in it... like u cant go in the shadows or dark spots or else u'll get devoured. the little things is what makes a game good. and i didnt see anything like that in halo, no complexity to the game, its too easy and too simple.

Oh yeah I forgot about GTAIV as well. Yeah that one can definately challenge Halo 3. It could even potentially outdo the incredible first day sales considering it will release on both the 360 and PS3 at the same time. While I doubt Super Mario Galaxy will outdo H3 first day sales wise considering how hot the Wii is and how excellent the game looks to be it can certainly compete in lifetime sales.

There's a lot of buzz around SSB: Brawl, too. I wonder what will become of that.

probably 2 million copies of SSB will be sold lifetime, but seriously it seems like no one buys as many games as those that own a 360, so really I can only see GTAIV passing Halo 3 in sales.

It sounds logical to me. GTA:SA was huge. There's no doubt that GTA IV will be just as big (most likely bigger) with the multi-platform launch.
