2013 looks to be the end of this gen, but between 2006 to 2013, what games regardless if they are console or PC would YOU consider the ones that will be remembered and would recommend to future generations of gamers? Feel free to add games that will come out later in the year.

I spent the first half of the gen playing PS2 games and WoW and the second half of the gen playing indie games and a few memorable titles like Dishonored and Far Cry 3. There were a lot of good games but not that many GREAT games imo.

i'm way behind in current games and have been playing mostly older games and indie games this gen (which are awesome in their own right but i struggle to think of one as a true "gem"). from the games i did play i consider the following games to be most memorable and think that everyone should have played them or do so asap: the witcher, crysis, mirror's edge, company of heroes, left4dead 2, portal and, possibly, metro 2033.

To me, a "gem" is a game that I'll want to replay in 5, 10, 20 years. A game that is essentially timeless. Good examples from last gen would be Shadow of the Colossus, Metroid Prime, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Civilization 3.

This gen, I'd say Portal, Outland and Aquaria are good very examples of timeless gems.

Portal definitely.

Darkness II has one of the best female characters ever in a game, that makes you feel intimacy without any cheap exploitativeness.

Mafia II I felt was way underappreciated. Like, there are some very very sophisticated game design elements in the game that are very very impressive. The AI is one of the best I've ever seen in a game, and the way that they apply real trajectory into the damage a car takes is also impressive.

Bioshock Infinite will be remembered well. I haven't finished it yet, however.

Uncharted 2 is good because it sort of got away from the annoying dumb machoness in games.

Ew. I respectfully disagree. :P

Dark Souls is definitely the biggest one for me. Of course there are also the great fighting games to come out, like SSFIV, MK9, and Tekken Tag 2.

Personally I have to go with (I'd play these games 5-10 years down the road again)

  • Mass Effect
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Uncharted 1-3
  • Bioshock
  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Far Cry 3
  • RDR
  • Skyrim
  • Starcraft 2 WoL and HotS
  • TW2
  • L4D
  • L4D 2

Games that are "hidden" gems of this gen, I would have to go with

  • Hotline Miami
  • FTL
  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Lego Lotr
  • Dragon's Dogma
  • Kingdoms of Amalur
  • Spec Ops The Line

Metal Gear Solid 4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and the Mass Effect trilogy are all great video games. Also, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Street Fighter IV, and Demon Souls are gems of this generation.

The daytime stages were a blast. Could've done without the silly God of War-esque night stages.

Dishonored Mass Effect 1-3 for the insane amount of gameplay you can get out of it, Ending pulls it way down though. Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas GTA IV Bioshock 1 - Bioshock Infinite´s hype will hopefully die down, because its good its just not Half-Life good. Those are a few i think will be remebered.

Definitely Nier. It's one of those games that's overlooked, not mainstream and is one of the best games I've played this gen. Unfortunately the developers no longer exist. Same thing happened to Okami. Another great gen that was overlooked and under the radar.

I couldn't agree more. Enslaved was an outstanding game. That it didn't sell enough to warrant a sequel is a real shame... and an indication of one of the more negative aspects  of this generation.

Since 2006? Jeeez. Off the top of my head:

Consoles: Arkham games, SMG I and II, Uncharted II, Mirror's Edge, Journey, Fallout 3, RDR, Farcry 3, Heavy Rain, maybe a few others.

PC: Silent Hunter IV, DCS games, Company of Heroes, the Witcher 1&2, a few others as well...

Vanquish

Portal 2

Oblivion and Skyrim

Dragon Age Origins

Demon's Souls

Little Big Planet Two

Deus Ex: Human Revolutio
