I'd like to see a new main character and a new city to explore. I can't think of any better way for a new developer to take over the series than to start it up with their own leading man (or woman) and a new city to rob blind.

A stable editor is my second choice. That gimpy one legged thing they released for Thief 3 was about as much fun to use as it is to watch a 3 video on the mating habits of snails.

New character you say? Female you say?

It's supposed to be a female. However, I still want the game to take place in the old city. The city is amazing. I really hope the game captures the city atmosphere that Deadly shadows did.

I want Garrett back in action and I hope they keep the splinter cell control system. I wish for a more open ended storyline and the ability to explore the city during the day to gather informations and perform sidequests and do the main missions at night.

First- No third-person view! If you wanna see around the corner, you are going to have to stick you head out and peek!

Second- BRING BACK ROPE ARROWS!

Third- Bring back the animated cutscenes from the first 2. Either that, or have the whole game stylized to look like that and do them in-engine.

Fourth- BETTER WRITING! Deadly Shadows peaked in spots, but the settings and dialogue were never quite as good as the first 2. Also, the explainations they thought up for things in Deadly Shadows was way less interesting than the questions Looking Glass raised in the first 2. I would rather have the game leave things unexplained than think of unsatisfying answers.

You know, looking at this list, I think I can sum it up in 1 instead of 4- Just make a sequel to The Metal Age and not Deadly Shadows. Better yet, pretend Deadly Shadows never existed!

And to the guy who says get rid of Garret-What is the point of even having this be a Thief game then? The setting and characters are part of the Thief experience. If you get rid of that, just make it a new series and avoid having the baggage and expectations the Thief name will bring among me and the 3 other people who really liked the first two games.

Take everything great about The Metal Age: great plot, great missions (there can never be too many manors to case), great cinematic cut scenes, keep the creatures and undead to a minimum, and of course first person view.

Just make a sequel to The Metal Age and not Deadly Shadows. Better yet, pretend Deadly Shadows never existed!

You can't go wrong with this.

SPOILER ALERT:

The other only "main" character other than Garret was Artemus and he died. It would be a very interesting approach to play as a female and give a slight different perspective on the city, while maintaining the setting. Then again, Thief is a cult game so perhaps a character change for Thief 5 would be more suitable. :D

Yeah, I'm not saying I'm totally opposed to a new protagonist, I just don't think they can do it and have it be as good. Garret is such a great and simple character, and it's always fun to get him in some crazy adventure. It's more about the oppurtunity cost of NOT having him be there.

That being said, if they really do want this series to go mainstream and keep getting sequels and stuff AND they want a new main character, they at least owe us one more game with Garret. I mean, after all the stuff the Keepers keep saying about his destiny and junk like that, they can't just write him off in the first few minutes of the game.

As a Thief fan, I honestly wouldn't want this series to go mainstream. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more Thief games and I still can't believe I'm talking about a very possible Thief 4 from waiting so long for it. If Thief went mainstream, developers would more than likely begin to attempt to appeal to larger audiences. It sickens me to see people bashing Deadly Shadows with all the talk about Thief now. Deadly Shadows was a fantastic game that kept true to it's roots. If Thief went mainstream, it could lose what made the series so great.
As far as Garrett and his destiny, all of that was undone when he activated the final glyph in Deadly Shadows. All glyph magic was abolished, along with all prophecies and books. The Keeper order has pretty much ceased to exist.
I'm just happy Thief 4 was only in pre-production when Ion Storm went under. Otherwise this would have been Thief 4.

Say hello to the futuristic granddaddy Garrett.

I personally think it would turn off a lot of Thief fans if they changed the protagonist from someone other than Garrett. I think Stephen Russel's voice acting was fantastic and added to the story and feel of the game. If you want to feel what another character would look and react like in Thief then try the fan-made Thief designed for Thief 2.

I would like to see more open ended gameplay much like Deadly Shadows hoped to accomplish but can be drastically enhanced without load times with the new technology out there. I want a choice when and where I do missions. The idea of an editor to add no areas and missions would truly enhance the game. I totally agree on the above for bringing back rope arrows. I also want to see some of the mechanist robots possibly working as serving/guard bots in mansions. Rooftop missions should also be key as that was one of the best missions in all of Thief 2 but kind of failed in Deadly Shadows. I truly hope that they do not leave the city as that is key to the Thief series and truly adds to the mystery. I want the developers to think New York city size Thief playground and then give me the missions and time to do it.

Thief 4 has been announced! As far as what you said pimp, I agree. Although, I'ddo without the robots. :P

The only reason why zombies were in the first was to increase sales. I say humans only. Well, zombies are fun so keep zombies. No robots or dinosaurs or anything like that.

Peeping mode.

Where you can sneak around and "steal" a peek at women taking showers.

Number one do not change the time period. Thief belongs in the medeval period not today. I don't want it turned into another Max payne, Max does that well enough.

Two, forget multiplayer.

Three, for heavens sake get it right. Thief One was true to it's period but Thief Two had 1930s architecture which jarred in a medeval game. Thief 3 had an architectural environment which looked painted like a theatre set, and so very unconvincing. The traveling between different towns in T3 was really boring and annoying as was the spawning of watchmen and guards.

Four, don't blur the lines between thieving from rich barons or enemies of the people and plain criminality. In Thief Three Garett was empowered to rob ordinary people in the street including women. Not a good message.

I would like Thief Three to be a sort of'Return to Bafford' and recapture the feel of Thief One; lots of rooftop climbing, return of the rope arrow and a good storyline. In Thief One The Hammerites were very impressive and breaking into their monastries was interesting.

Being an old Taffer from T1 I would welcome another Thief with open arms, but it should be well written and capture some of the brilliance of T1; i particularly remember the entry to Bafford castle swimming under an underground waterfall.

One more point. Remember the monk in The Haunted Cathedral level who wanted you to find some of his objects and place them in his grave? That was the best interaction in any of the games. Remember Cragscleft Prison? For me it was so real, none of the succeding games could match T1.

I dunno man, that game was always sorta steampunk. There are ELECTRIC LIGHT SWITCHES in the first Thief. The game doesn't take place in midieval Europe.

Also, I think you are missing the point in Thief. Garret steals from the rich because they have more to take, not because he feels like they don't deserve their wealth. He is not Robin Hood. He steals from the rich to give only to give to himself. The only reason you didn't steal from average dudes so much in the first game was because you almost never walked the city streets, but instead spent most of the time in some super-rich guy's compound.

I do like the steampunk setting. That is a type of world that games don't explore enough. However that wasn't the heart of the game and neither were the characters. They were ok, but also kind of generic. A secret society, an almost fanatical religous order, and a group of crazy forest people are hardly unique to a steampunk themed world.

The real draw was the stealth. Thief is the only true stealth based game on the market. Splinter Cell was good. However, Sam Fisher is a 1st class combatant capable of going toe to toe with just about anyone. Garrett is not. This made those nail biting is-he-going-to-see-me-or-not moment all the more thrilling. I can't tell you how many times I've caught myself holding my breath while playing.

Stealth is a powerful and fragile thing. When you're hidden you are the most powerful person in the room. However, the second they see you your "armor" is stripped away and you are out numbered and out gunned. No one else captured the essence of stealth thelike Thief. This is what makes the gamesuch a classic.

While I'd miss Garrett his story is done. We don't need him for the next game. The elements that made Thief what it is can be reproduced in a new city and with a new character.

How about they keep Garrett (ow man i love his voice), but, maybe, have the girl join him?

Ow i don't know.
For me, they don't have to relate the story AT ALL to the previous parts. New enemies, new weapons, whatever. I'm all for it as long as they bring back that typical gameplay and sneaky thievery (in the middle ages preferably).

I'm not saying they SHOULDN'T make a game like that, I'm just saying don't call it Thief. Like when Bethesda made Fallout 3, think of all the fan backlash they could have avoided if they just changed a few details to make it an original game not set in the Fallout universe. If you put Thief in the title, there will be certain expectations, and if those aren't met, the same fans who would buy your game under a different name will complain to no end on the tubes of the internets.
