Red Faction pulled it off on a ps2, easily the worst of the last gen hardware. One of the best things of that game was to have an all out battle with rocket launchers and admire the surrounding environmental destruction. You could destroy walls, pillars, even build huge caves from one part of the map to the other, though wildly impractical. What ever happened to this aspect of "next gen?" When you shoot a rocket at a wooden chair, that chair is not going to fly 20 feet. It is going to disappear into oblivion. With the power of the next gen consoles, why can't we evolve this aspect instead of completely getting rid of it?

I think a lot of devs want to run you down a chute, and they think destructible environments get in the way of their level design.  I don't agree with that at all, I loved building tunnels in Red Faction, and just screwing around with it... In their defence, take a look at Bioshock.  You couldn't make that game with destructible environments, because you'd be too worried about blowing a hole in a wall and flooding the place to properly take on a big daddy.  I kinda hope developers get on it, because so many different games would benefit from being able to blow the hell out of the environments.

Check out Stranglehold for destructible environments, and Fracture for destructible terrain. More games don't have this because it's difficult to implement and requires smart level design.

The usefull ofhaving fully destructible enviroments really depends on the type of game being made. For action/adventure games that depend highly on the enviroments for level design, this would not work. How fun would Metroid Prime be if you could just shoot missile after missile at walls until you clear a path to the end of the game? For first person shooters and more straight forward action games that are more focused on action and combat rather than exploration and the level design, destructible enviroments could work a lot better if you're just concerned with killing enemies and such.

I got to play a demo last weekend. It was a jungle level like far cry, but every building, tree, and vehicle came apart really nicely.

In all the games that say you can destroy the enviorment, you cant relly destroy everything in the enviorment. If it is inportant to the mission they're not going to make it so you can destroy that building or object.

In addition to the games already mentioned in this thread, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction had quite a bit of environmental destruction (skyscrapers could be brought down) so I expect its spiritual sequel, Prototype, will be even more impressive.

In PSYCHONAUTS, the Lungfishopolis level, you could destroy every building and squish people like Godzilla :D Very satisfying, I must say and freakin' hilarious.

I've had some fully destructible environments while playing games, but unfortunately it is usually my home :P
