If you owned a SNES I would tell you to get Final Fantasy Mystic Quest --- this game was made for beginners
Any one on the GBA.

to bad they over simplified it way to much... battles can get a little tough, but they just made it extremely linear and gave you very few party members and weapons and such to the point of ridiculousness..

IV, V and VI would be a perfect start
Indeed, IV and VI would be perfect starts with FF. I didn't care for V too much...but it wasn't a bad game either.
yeah, compared to IV, the storyline was weak, and compared to VI the battle system was weak.. I always felt it was the blacksheep of the 16bit Final Fantasys (if you forget Mystic Quest)

I agree, with limited weapons, smaller party, limited spells, simple story, and no random battles, makes this game perfect for RPG beginners. But if your an experienced RPG player it will be easy and as you say ridiculous.
This was my first RPGs and it's one of my favorites beacuse of that.

With your system selection, I'd say you're not going to get the best Final Fantasy has to offer.
If you're not experienced with ANY RPGs, I'd suggest one of the earlier SNES-era Final Fantasy games, all of which have already been suggested.
If you have some experience with RPGs, and you've just never played Final Fantasy, I'd have to say you should start out with Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy IX. For a total Final Fantasy noob, probably IX, even though I started with VII and love it to this day.
Oh...and while you're at it, play Xenogears. Guarantee you won't regret it.

Perhaps I should go back and play the two again, but I remember Final Fantasy IX having a much simpler story and also being much more reminiscent of the old-school SNES Final Fantasy games.
final fantasy mystic quest is a spin-off made for beginners. I will say that every(other) final fantasy has is good and bad sides for begining.in this case final fantasy 1,2,5 are not good option final fantasy has a good progression but it's hard and differnt from the next episodes, final fantasy 4is a little bit to hard although he is the simplest in any other aspect, final fantasy 6 is a great option to begin with but has some complicated moments, final fantasy cristal chornicles in not even a sin-off it's more a waste of money than anithing else, and has nothing to do with a final fantsy at all. the best you can do is buy 6 for GBA or wait for the remake of 4 for ds.

final fantasy V was a try to transform the system of III into the new battle system and they did it bad. and the second try to make the job system right was a success...but because everything else was so horrible everyone tries to forget abot XII, this is the great question ¿will square-enix make a final fantasy(exept the tactics serie) with the job system that is better that III?! I think no, because the saga is changing again
final fantasy has a good progression but it's hard and differnt from the next episodes
bardos-the-3rd
final fantasy 3

IV, V and VI would be a perfect start
Agreed, however I would get a PS1 and get IV - VII

I wouldn't make it a priority to get a NES or SNES Final Fantasy game on the PS1, the load times are terrible, and the new cutscenes aren't even worth it...
I wanted to start playing Final Fantasy games and I was wondering which one was the best to start off with. I own a Game Cube, Wii, DS, N64, and GBA. Thanks in advance for replying.super_robot_guy
Seeing as you don't have a PS2, I say start out with FFV for gba. FFI, FFII, FFIV, and FFVI are also available for the gba, plus FFIII is for the DS. I believe FFVII is available for the PC, but those seem to be harder to find than the PS1 version.
Your best bet is FFV and FFIV.
