I've seen people claiming themselves as one in some forums and games. Is it euphamism for "basement dweller" or "no-life"?

According to Wikipedia, "Hardcore gamer is a widely used term applied to describe a type of video game player. There is currently no unanimously agreed upon definition for the term. Some describe hardcore gamers as those whose leisure time is largely devoted to playing video games. This type of gamer prefers to take significant time and practice on games, in contrast to a casual gamer."
According to me, "Hardcore gamer is a term used to describe gamers who sit around and act cool because they play Rated M first person shooters 24/7."
A hardcore gamer is one who goes to bed thinking of that last epic boss fight. And yes, they can have girlfriends.

Someone who defines their primary form of entertainment as playing Videogames on any syatem at least plays 1 time per day.
Can be PC or Consoles Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii. Or Handheld portable gaming ipad/iPod touch, Nintendo's3DS Or DS and Gameboy series. PSP series (or NGP 4Q 2011)
Or even "extinct" Consoles/handhelds Sega Genesis, DreamCast, Atari 2500, Lnyx,SNK Neo Geo, NEC TurboDuo, Turboexpress,Panasonic 3DO, Colecovision, etc.
Playing Videogames in a "HardCore" fashion. It is possible to be a Hardcore Videogame player on Nintendo's Wii. (Which is by definition not a Hardcore Videogame machine)Although it would be difficult todo an "all nighter" while playing the Nintendo Wii
Hard Core gamers "All night" sometimes. Have massive Gamer Score/Trophies, Massive Collections possibally.
Basically Enjoy the Videogame Universe.
Have a shrine to the father or Videogaming or gone though at least 25 controllers per generation.........
(OK maybe not the last 2 criteria)
Basically a "hardcore-gamer" is the one that takes the game really seriously and plays all the time.
That phrase lost meaning years ago when bro gamers started perverting it to label anyone who doesn't exclusively play M rated games as casual gamers or as childish.
A hardcore gamer someone who devotes spare time to playing video games, but also takes it upon themselves to accomplish the hardest tasks available in games in more than one genre.
Simply playing games all of the time is not "hardcore" one must challenge themselves. If someone played Barney and friends 24/7 on different consoles, would you declare them a hardcore gamer or a hardcore barney fan?
The meaning really depends on whether you mean 'hardcore gamer' or hardcore gamer. There really is a difference. A lot of newer gamers like to claim they're hardcore just because they've played some blood-soaked FPS, but to really be a hardcore gamer, you have to put time to actively expanding your interests, and becoming learned in the field of gaming. Play a lot of games and you'll become a hardcore gamer. Simple as that.
There's no set definition, but the implicitly agreed upon definition is that "hardcore gamer" is synonymous with "enthusiast". Thus, a hardcore gamer is a person for whom gaming is a hobby, not a past-time. Basically the difference between a "hardcore" gamer and a "casual" gamer is that casual gamers only play a few games (most commonly COD, Halo, Madden, Wii Sports, etc.) whereas hardcore gamers play a ton of games, most of which the average casual gamer probably hasn't heard about. While a casual gamer just plays games about as often as they watch movies and has no further involvement with them, a hardcore gamer treats gaming as their primary (or at least very important) form of entertainment and thus pays close attention to upcoming releases, gaming news, reviews, etc. You could think of hardcore gamers as being the gaming version of film buffs, bibliophiles, and audiophiles; people who are far more informed/enthusiastic about a particular media than the average person.gameguy6700I guess that makes me "hardcore" too. It seems like a suitable definition, but why didn't we all just call it 'gaming enthusiasts'?
LMAO [QUOTE="gameofthering"]
I searched google for "Hardcore Gamer" and this is what I found.

But the two are interchangeable, just like how "film buff" is interchangeable with "film enthusiast".[QUOTE="gameguy6700"]There's no set definition, but the implicitly agreed upon definition is that "hardcore gamer" is synonymous with "enthusiast". Yay :3 ( every game that has a rating is a game I have beaten or if the game is unbeatable ( due to endless levels ) it is a game I have beaten into the ground :P )
Just a self-classification some gamers, including myself, use to let others know that they are very into gaming as a hobby. There is no standards under which one must fall, and no, not everyone must be classified as "casual" or "hardcore". Gamers are gamers.

That is one fat ugly nerd who proclaims himself has a hardcore gamer lmao.
But IMO a hardcore gamer is someone who knows their games and plays only good games. A causal gamer is someone who doesen't know anything about video games they like to play shovel wear like most of the games you find on the Wii or Kinect and they just play mainstream stuff.
A hardcore gamer someone who devotes spare time to playing video games, but also takes it upon themselves to accomplish the hardest tasks available in games in more than one genre.

Agreed, best definition I've read so far.
basically a gamer where gaming is like a full time joblamprey263
You have to be good, too. You can play all day long but it isn't hardcore if you're terrible.
