I finally forced myself to finish Mass Effect 2 and I want to know what exactly the big deal is, why do people like it so much, the story was good but there are other games with much better stories, the combat was fun but too repetivie for a 20-30 hour game, there were very few RPG elements and the level's lacked variety.

The cast of characters and their sub plots, the combat finally being polished to a level that something with so much focus actually plays well, and the continuation of the saga. Honestly I think the gushing that surrounded it was a bit too much, but it's good for what it is, and was a sensible step forwards in the formula (ME never was 'deep' to begin with in terms of complexity, I think the simplification worked to its advantage). What I appreciated the most was the good multitude of fails states in the finale, even if it was all a bit arbitrary here and there.

I liked the expanded cast and the role you played in their loyalty missions and subplots. The game had a lot more polish- specifically the combat. What brought it down for me though was the lack of rpg elements (I would have loved a more hardcore RPG style to the game) and I prefered ME1's ending to ME2. And the Mako, I miss exploring the surface of planets...

I really enjoyed the characters, it had some of the best I've seen in quite a while. And I found it extremely immersive - it really drew me into its universe and its story. The combat was quite fun though a bit rough around the edges. It's been a while since I played it, but I seem to remember it having a very good variety of gameplay. I platinumed it, and the playthrough on insanity difficulty certainly forced you to use every tactic available to you.

Other than the add the JRPG ideal that all enemies have different weakness. They ere able to make the fight better than the first game. Too bad they limit your role by what class you pick.

The casts is one of the most cliche cast in any game.

I loved every aspect of it. Characters were done so well and the whole story too. Amazing game, I want to replay it. Too bad games are never as good as the first playthrough.

While the characters are fairly generic overall, they do have cool stories to explore and the combat is far improved over the first game. The main appeal of ME2 for me was seeing how the decisions you make in ME impact the story of the second game.

The only thing that really bothered me was how linear the levels were, making for boring combat.

Same here.

That was my biggest gripe with the game. Besides that & the planet scanning i had no other issues. Probably the greatest & most fully realized space oriented Sci Fi series, especially in terms of writing, characters & story.

Thats what makes it so great. There is nothing that rivals it. I like to think of it as the game Halo should & could be..... but never was.

Aside from the improved combat it's in every single way inferior to the original Mass Effect. Planet scanning, Miranda and that stupid final boss are a clear indication of why.

It polished up a lot of the problems in the first game, and made it extremely accessible to the non-RPG crowd by streamlining all the RPG elements. Had they just taken the first game and tightened up the combat, I would have been much happier (especially if they retained the planetary exploration). There was a "magic" about the first game that just wasn't in the second or third (Palaven had hints of it, but you were still shepherded down corridors). I picked the third one back up today (a random craving overcame me), after a two month hiatus from everything that wasn't Dark Souls, and I was so painfully bored with the combat, I turned it down to "narrative" difficulty so I could just get the ending over and done with. Should finish it tomorrow, and I can get back to DkS and finish my Darkwraith.

You're implying that ME2 had good combat? I'm not saying the game was horrid, but the combat was just absolutely the worst aspect of it.

I really enjoyed Mass Effect 2 despite not having played the first 1. The characters, story, and gameplay all seemed great to me.

Having 11 squadmembers, keeping them all at the end was fun. Also the formula for ME2 was right, because the DLCs actually added to the storyline.

Too bad BioWare blew it on the third game, they should have used the same formula, that is, a choice-driven ending.

It's a character driven game. If you don't like games that focus on story and character development, you won't like it.

As much as I loved the first game I enjoyed ME2 even more. It was a very well-written and voice-acted game. The combat was much improved along with the graphics.

Its my favorite game of all time. I loved all of the characters except maybe Samara. all of their subplots and loyalty missions were intruiging. Some characters really grew on me, like Moridn, who i hated to being with but he ended up being one of my favorite characters in the series.

The combat is so much approved over the first one, and you really feel in control of your powers. One of the only games i have played where i felt i was really affecting the story.

I want to start playing the game, but when I played the demo, I ran out of ammo. What's up with that?! If you can't find more ammo, then how can you play even the demo?

Really?! Seriously, I actually enjoyed it and thought it was fairly good. Nothing amazing, but decent and actually competent enough to pace the game. The first however, that was pretty damn terrible, in that respect it was massive improvement.

It's the best game in the series, you build relationships with your crew and your decisions really do make the outcome of the game and it was the best game of 2010.

Is ME2 the new Halo? I swear I've seen three or four of ME2-is-overrated threads in the past couple of months.

Whenever people say they *just* finished up a particular game, it tells me they weren't enthusiastic enough to get into the series in the first place, and they were playing against their will (at least, it sure sounds like it, with all the complaining). Added to the fact that this game is a sequel, if you don't see why people love the franchise by now, you never will.

Until you can name a game from this generation that more or less satisfies the cravings of Trekkies, Star Wars, Stargate, Battlestar, and Firefly fans that is ALSO completely playable (combat is enjoyable, not excellent), Mass Effect 2 fills that niche quite nicely.

Story, gameplay and the conversations. Basically, it's like Uncharted on space and you get to choose what you say.

Beats the heck out of me. I might force myself to finish it one day, but the game is completely and utterly devoid of anything compelling. Mass Effect 1 was decent-to-good, and showed some real potential. I don't know why Bioware went the way they did with the second, but unless I get the 3rd for free, I probably won't ever see how it finishes. You'll see no tears from me over that, though.

ME2 is easily my favorite game of all time, I can't think of any single player game besides the first Mass Effect that I have gone back to reply time and time again. I am always in the middle of a playthrough of this game, I think I have played through and beaten it about 13 times now, DLC and all. The dialogue, music, characters and story all combine to make an amazing experience that I feel no other game can match.

I think the level design while good, is probably the weakest link and kind makes the combat feel very enclosed but it is leaps and bounds more enjoyable then the first game. The game is all about characters and their stories, and I think that is why people tend to miss the point with the game. It plays more like say a TV show then a game, where each character is its own episode, and the background story is fleshed out in pieces and waiting until the end to bring it all together.
