Well, I liked the Crash and Spyro games.

For me, it's Chrono Cross, but Legend of Mana and Final Fantasy IX are close behind.

as far as RPGs go, definitely get "xenogears" and "Legend of dragoon" (dont get FFVII. trust me. its nothing great.)

for platforming, I would highly reccomend spyro 3 (even though the crash bandicoot games are good too, I still think spyro 3 is the best platforming game of all time. well, at least since the NES age)

for FPS, there is a decent "dark forces" port available for the ps1.

for racing, "crash team racing" or CTR for short (speed punks is good too, but not quite as good)

for just plain kickass multiplayer action, "vigilante 8"

those games are "musts" for any PS1 owner. you should get them all. they are some of the best the system has to offer.

Someone else will have Resident Evil 2, someone will have Final Fantasy VII, someone will have Metal Gear Solid, someone will have Gran Turismo 2, someone will have Einhander, and someone will have an obscure title like Tomba for their best.

There is no right or wrong answer - everyone has a "best". Every game that is a favorite is a best game for a particular platform.

Mine would be Twisted Metal 2.

That is WAY too braod but I would probably say tekken 3 then spyro year of the dragon.

If I were to just pick one, I'd have to go with the original Twisted Metal 2. Personally I may prefer the first, but the second is a better game AND it is yet to be topped in its respective genre. Both of them are replayable and I think I'll put it in right now instead of playing a more modern game.

if you like rpg's then don't trust him and get ff7. its looked upon fondly for good reason, obviously it can't ever live up to all the hype that was created by it but it is still one of the best ff's imo.

The great thing about the PS1 is that Squaresoft was basically at its peak during this particular generation. After there merger with Enix, they pretty much severly went down hill starting with FFX all the way up to Last Remnant and Infinite undiscover (which are all awful btw) so if you wanna know what squaresoft is all about the PS1 is a great place to start.

People are also recommending Legend of Dragoon. If you're a beginner to RPG's id also recommend it but if you're a veteran I would probably just skip it. Chances are you've seen it all before, and squaresofts offerings are all 10x better then anything sony could ever put out.

The first 3 games I think of when I hear PS1 is Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and Final Fantasy Tactics ( I like the other, but Tactics is a personal favorite).

My personal favorite has to be Xenogears and Suikoden 2.

Final Fantasy VII or Vagrant story. You can pick one of this two.Awesome story,deep gameplay,good boss battles.

Resident Evil 1 and 2, Jet Moto, Twisted Metal 1 and 2, Ace Combat 2, DieHard Trilogy, Tekken2......take your pick
