ninja gaiden gave me the most trouble, and im usually good at those types of games. of course, most of my troubles game from those ****ing ghost fish. supposedly there was a way to shake them off, but nothing seemed to work when i tried it.
EDIT:i just figured id share how much i appreciate the tc's conversation starter. it really got things rolling.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn was a VERY hard game, and it doesn;t help that hundreds of enemies would be popping up out of nowhere closer too the end of the game!
Zelda II: Adventures of Link on the NES was insanely hard, you basically had to fight through hundreds of strong, tough enemies in humongous dungeons with a butterknife >_>. How anybody can beat that game without cheating is beyond me...
ninja gaiden sigma for me, i rented it and got pretty far but couldnt beat this one boss and i had to take it back and i never played it after that. since i have my save still and sigma 2 is coming out and i am bored with all of my games because i have beaten almost all of them at least 7 times, i guess i should get that now.....
Hardest overall is Ninja Gaiden on the xbox, but I could beat it if I wanted to. As far as games that I can't beat, Mario 1 and Jedi Academy. I've never beaten Mario Bros 1. There is a series of jumps in level 8-2 that I can never complete no matter how many lives I have. I've been working on it for 20 years now and I still can't do it. I can't beat Kyle Katarn in Jedi Academy when I crank up the difficulty all the way and don't use the powers that gimp the game (Grip and Lightning). We have some epic battles that go on for 10+ minutes with more acrobatics than the movies, but in the end he always get me. He cheats though. He's got moves that I don't and seems to have like infinite force points.
Are we just referring to games that are hard on the default or "normal" difficulty settings?....I know a few games that go from boringly easy to insanely hard just by increasing the difficulty up one(COD 2 comes to mind)....but I'd have to say Ninja Gaiden II is one game that gets really hard in the later chapters...and is almost impossible on higher difficulty settings (if not impossible, then extremely annoying).
I'd have to say Fire Emblem. I played the GBA versions, not on my GBA though, I couldn't stand getting any of my players killed and even then it still took me over 40 hours to play through the first one. Although I enjoyed those 40 hours :P.

You sure you just don't know the sequence of jumps and which portals to go through in SMB? The last level is kinda hard, but once you know the warp sequence it's much easier. I'd help you with it, but it's been nearly 17 years since I last played the game. As far as hard games for me, Battletoads takes the cake. I just could never get past the hover cycle stage. There is no recent game I've played that was super hard imo, as in, so hard I couldn't beat it. But Battletoads, man that's a beast. The first TMNT was waaaaay hard too. On the last stage, there were these pilot like guys that were tough. They took all your power before you fought shredder, and there were like 20 shredders to beat as I recall.
I'm not counting arcade games as they are meant to literally be too hard so you keep spending money. Shmups I don't count either.
Boy there are a lot of newer games on here. They do not make games as hard as they used to. Where is the love for Super Ghouls n Ghosts? If you want to go a little more modern, try out Ikaruga. if you want to go retro chic, take a look at Mega Man 9. It's brutal and unforgiving.

Dude, i agree with you. They surely doesn`t make the games as hard as they used to. A few hard games that i`ve played: almost all of the contras, Street Fighter 2: new challengers on max difficulty (take time to get used to.. but i`m managing to beat those guys on the max difficulty now), battletoads.
