I know this series has been milked to death but there are definitely some gems that are actually really good.

For me it would have to be Black Flag. That game really nailed the exploration and setting. I really felt like I was a pirate and I longed for the sea and treasure. The world was also stunning to look at and had great activities like fighting legendary ships. Though I must say it also retains some things in the series that I really dislike and that is littering the open world with useless and boring things. I really hate collectibles in a lot of games because they aren't executed properly. They are just an artificial way to increase the game's lifespan.

Never really been a fan of the AC games until I played Black Flag... which was soooo good. Now I check out each release, and really enjoyed Syndicate more recently too.

Agreed, though I count that (and Brotherhood) as Assassin's Creed 2 since they're both Ezio. I know that's a weird way to look at it, but imo the AC games should be chronicled by protagonist, not necessarily by chronological order.

Assassin's Creed 2, no question. It's also the most improved sequel to a game I've ever played.

In order, for the ones I've played,

2>>Unity>1>Brotherhood>Revelations>>3

Not interested in Black Flag or Syndicate really. I got my fill of AC with Unity recently and probably won't jump back on until they shake things up considerably. I'm really tired of the "litter a giant world with a million boring side quests and trinkets" formula they all are following now.

From the first game up until AC3 it was Brotherhood. I gave the franchise a rest for a while and decided to play Black Flag. I absolutely loved it for reasons that have been mentioned. It didn't feel a whole lot like an Assassin's Creed game, but I guess that's why I enjoyed it so much. Rogue was pretty good as sort of a spin-off to that game. I have yet to play Unity or Syndicate. I might just skip Unity and just play Syndicate at some point. I might miss out on some of the "real world" story, but I wonder if that's even worth following at this point lol.

Unity's modern day story is completely forgettable, in that I played it only a couple of months ago and literally the only things I remember about it are that a disembodied voice talks the entire time, and that I was bored to death by the end of every cut-scene. If that's what you're interested in I'd just go ahead and look up any main points online and save yourself the trouble.

But to be honest I grew bored with the modern day stuff by Revelation, so I may not be the best judge.

Yeah, Ezio trilogy is amazing. Black Flag was also one of the best AC games. Didn't like 3 at all and didn't touch any AC game after Black Flag, since franchise fatigue kicked in. Might try new one since it's made by Black Flag team and takes place in Egypt.

Assassin's Creed 2 for me too. I have played almost all in the series (haven't played Syndicate yet) and it's still my favorite.

Black Flag was good fun but didn't feel as meaty in terms of story. What little was there was quite enjoyable.

Unity in some aspects was trully great. Paris is to this time the most impressive city I've seen in any video game. The balloon sequence was amazing. Too bad it was bogged down by bugs, a lot of busywork and an uninspired story.

I'm one of the few people that really disliked Brotherhood. It felt like a step down from 2 with only one city, the story felt a lot worse, the characters, the ones that appeared in 2, felt poorly written in Brotherhood. Also the things that were introduced like the Assassins brotherhood and the building renovation felt like extra work that dilluted the core experience. It's funny to say that now, with much worse offenders like 3 and Unity being out.

With that in mind I was weary about Revelations. I was pleasantly surprised. Constantinopole (or Instabul if you prefer) was a nice change of pace from all the italian architecture and I really enjoyed the hidden tombs that reminded me a bit of Prince of Persia. Even the bombs were more fun than I expected.

Unity and Syndicate were both good games, but yeah...get's a little repetitive. They're really milking the 18-19th centuries. I wish they'd hurry up and get to modern/current times, I cannot wait for that to happen. Though I wonder if they ever will; the whole AC franchise is about playing in the past.

I just want to see the series come to it's conclusion; all good stories need an ending lol.

Black Flag - no contest. It nailed the pirate aesthetic and the sense of freedom in that game is virtually unmatched. It deserves far more recognition than it currently gets.

AC up until Ezio´s story end.

After that it's been utter shit with no direction or good story.

Black Flag was an exception to the shit , it was a fairly good game and would have worked so much better as a separate IP.

I agree with this. I used to like this series a lot more than I do now that it is copied and pasted all to hell. When 2 came out it was such a hit because it improved so much of what was wrong with the original Assassin's Creed. I also remember loving the fact that it was one of the only games (if the first ever) to be set during the Renaissance era and then meeting da Vinci and that gun!

Then Black Flag came out. This is one of the only games to feature pirates! Sailing the seas and sinking ships is a blast. Awesome! It is a tough choice considering Black Flag feels less like an assassin game and more about conquering the open waters as an assassin masquerading as a pirate, but yeah I think I'll have to go with 4.

The first one. Despite it's repetition, it actually made you feel like an assassin. You planned your attacks, routes, etc and when everything was in place, you struck. Every subsequent game from thereon in was padded with unnecessary crap that distracted from the point of the games: assassinations.

Yeah that was really my only hangup with Black Flag; the main character didn't want to be an assassin. I mean I get it, anti-authority, self-made "privateer" (aka pirate) doesn't want to join a sacred, ancient order of people dedicated to saving the world.

But the Assassins are so damn cool who wouldn't want to join them? All the main characters in the other series were stoked or honored to join the order (though Ezio was a bit of a smartass about it...).

I'll have to replay AC2, it's been a while.

I highly recommend Oliver Bowden's "The Secret Crusade". It's one of those game tie-in novels that makes Altair really stand out as a character.

I stopped playing right after AC3 'cuz I feel like the main point of the story is gone, since Desmond died. But from the AC's I played, AC: Brotherhood was the best (for me): gameplay-wise and story-wise.

Assassins creed 2 hands down! I stopped playing after brotherhood since things became to repetitive. Currently playing syndicate which I had low expectations for but its actually really fun definitely the grappling hook and playing as two interesting protagonists.

Gave up on AC games, waiting on a pirate game from Ubisoft.

Hands down 2 was the best. The first was a good, maybe even a great game, but it is a little hard to revisit. I played the second game for hundreds of hours and I have a blast. After AC 2 they never were really able to capture the magic- at least not for me.

Just played Unity a bit; I feel most AC games are pretty awesome. The only "less good" ones I can really think of our AC3 and Rogue: AC3 was pretty inconsistent and the protagonist was not interesting, but I did like the story; and Rogue was completely unnecessary, coasting off the success of Black Flag.

But yeah I really like pretty much all of them. Ubisoft gets a bad rap for a lot of reason, most bad but a few good ones, but they consistently put out quality games.

I wish they'd end the series, though, especially with a modern-era or near-future installment; really want to see the conclusion of the series.

Yeah, AC2 definitely has what the French call "I don't know what..." to it. Hard to turn that into something tangible; it was just great. For more reasons than just practical ones.

Kind of a curse, because you can't always quantify that and put it in other games. It's why I try to treat each game in a series (especially long series like AC) as it's own game, and not a continuation.

AC rogue, it's an unpopular choice but I really appreciated playing from a templar's point of view. It had some of black flag's best elements and length of the game was just about right.

This. Precisely. Nothing much else to be said. Black Flag was the best, absolutely.

Except... And all haters will hate:

Unity. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of Unity. I bought it after the bugs were mostly taken care of so I did not even see one single bug through my gameplay of 50-60 hours. The multiplayer was very fun, the city was the best city ever designed in an AC game, characters were good enough, story was weak but it pushed the game nevertheless. But the atmosphere, the NPC on the streets, the songs sang among the rebels, the destructive nature of the Revolution etc. etc.- I think those were very well reflected.

PLUS: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood had a very fun multiplayer too, in my opinion. I am talking about the one where you try not to act as an assassin so that other players will think you are an NPC until you mark another player who also tries to set the same deceit and kill them. That was from Brotherhood, right?
