The Saints Row series will always be better than GTA. GTA has a lot of good things going for it, but it's a bit too serious, the missions can be a bit sloppy to do, very frustrating at times, and the controls and physics don't match up well.
But when you play more of Saints Row, it's clearly the opposite. It's a lot more fun, especially with co-op. The missions are crazy and SO MUCH FUN and I just enjoy the "Go anywhere, do anything" aspect of it. Fact is, your partner isn't restricted in this and neither are you. All the Saints Row games are a blast and better. :)
I hated Saints Row 1, Disliked SR 2 and Loved SR 3 :S I truely disliked the whole "Gangsta" vibe the first two SR games had, but really loved the crime syndicate thing SR3 had going for it (or how it was going for it).
I always loved the Humor in SR, and since GTA lost thier humor or sense of Irony SR have become my favorite of the two.
I like how SR knows it is a game, how it can poke fun of everything, and be fun just for the sake of fun. It is not a game to play and take seriously. It is just a whole lot of fun with few strings attatched (and I love the controls, and engine aswell). Just a huge sandbox to go have fun in and a story that is more "popcorn actionflick" then oscar nominated Gangster movie.
Music is not the best tho -.-
GTA Is the obvious comparison game. But to me GTA has lost alot of what made the series good in GTA 4 (Episodes got a bit of it back again). I really liked GTA 3 and the two stand alone expansions (VC and SA).
But they have torn out alot of the fun in thatseries, And GTA 4 was pretty much one of the biggest mistakes Rockstar have made in my eyes, an unlikable main character, and in general just unlikable characters, a lot of maintenance with the "frinedship metagame thing" And just too serioustone for its own good.
I never got the praise that GTA4 got for its visuals, but the music overall was pretty good. The combat was "ok" not gamebreaking but not really smashing either.
So SR has taken my preference now. In large because the humor resonates with me,it is more of a world gone raving mad, filled with stereotypes and bad bad jokes then anything else. But that is exactly what I love about it. It does not try to be serious, it does not try to get a halfbaked point across (and fail misserably) It is just tongue-in-cheek oneliners, absolutestupidity, and a game that laughs at itself.

Great fun. The first was little more than a bland, boring GTA clone with the usual male lead only and limited fun. The second improved on things considerably by improving the character creation, allowing for playing as female - something no other game of that type has ever done and still hasn't done other than Saints Row 3, increased the fun and kept tongue in cheek instead of going the realism route. Saints Row 3 is just as fun as SR2 and even more tongue in cheek, which is good to see among so many realism themed games in the market. i find the games to be a lot better than the GTA series - They allow for playing as female, something no Rockstar game, nor any other game of that nature allows beyond that dull table tennis game, they allow for creating the character to your liking, something the GTA series never allows, they are designed to be over the top fun instead of mind numbing realism and they don't have a fat annoying cousin calling you every few minutes for some boring activity. Real life is real enough, I play games to have some fun, not go right back in boring real life with a boring male lead.Smokescreened84

Anyway, it's an awesome series. I'm wondering how many times i'll read "GTA clone lollerz its awful"

I couldn't think of what to say to "his" comment, but I think the eye rolling smiley covers it. lolI love the Saints Row 2 and 3, I have never played the first due to my lack of an Xbox 360.
The first thing I would like to say is that Saints Row 2 and Saints Row The Third are not GTA Clones (in fact, no game is, the term GTA Clone is only used by ignorant people), it's like comparing Burnout and Gran Turismo. I have never played an open world game with more customisation that Saints Row 2 and 3.

A mix of a few differnt things I think.
1) the engine is godaweful, and results in fare more clunky gameplay then most games.
2) In SR 2 the main characters are STILL mainly gangers, and a hopeless stereotype I dislike, alot (presonal preference, not the games fault for this one).
3) The padding, like how you need the fame to prograss through mission, making the game fairly bloated and often breaks any pacing.
4) while I liked the NPCs more in SR2, I disliked the guy I playied alot (kind of a problem when you outright dislikes who you are playing as).
Basicly the above that ticked me off about SR2.

Fair enough, but...The gangs in Saints Row 2 were leaps better than SR3.
SR3 doesn't have septic avenger and many of the other fun activities that were in the previous game.
SR2 had great scenes while not taking itself too seriously unlike SR3
(I'm too tired to list more)
Its all preference
I prefer GTA for many reasons & i think it does every single aspect better than SR. I believe San Andreas had more things to do & all of them were executed better than any SR game
The mission design in SR is amatuer. There is no thought to the mission design. I feel like the designer just dropped a bunch of enemies in a random spot & calls it a day. Thats the very extensive mission designing process LMAO
The acitivies in SR are boring, not fun & horribly exceuted yet i love the activities in all of the GTA games, espescially SA. Missions design & city design are where GTA succeeds & where SR fails.
Unlike most of you I enjoy a serious game. I don't know why but I just think they are more realistic. Saints Row The Third was hilarious thoughTheJgMan
I think nearly all of us here like a serious game...
The first game was derivative but fun. It enjoyed the benefit of being the first HD GTA Clone.
SR2 is excrement. I love Volition as a developer but I think SR2 is damn near worthless. Fug-ugly visuals (some of the interiors were damn near PS2 –looking), crap mechanics (cars handled like boxes) stiff locomotion and dull shooting. SR2 was an exercise in kitchen sink design and while the game still receives copious praise for the variety of missions and activities I personally found the whole endeavor incredibly shallow and subsequently dull.
SR:TT was pretty great. The game looks and plays well and Volition has done a good job of making the franchise something disparate from GTA but in all sincerity I still think Volition is capable of so much more. Red Faction: Guerrilla for example was brilliant and in my estimation far better than any of the SR games.
I would also postulate here and now that Just Cause 2 is vastly superior to any and all of the SR games. JC2 is technically gorgeous, filled to the brim with variety, and revels in bombast and absurdity while offering tight and compelling gameplay.
