I wouldn't want a new PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo system until 2015 at the earliest. I'm a huge fan of Sony's plan to have each console have a 10 year life cycle and I wish Microsoft and Nintendo would also follow this rule. I also wish there was some sort of rule that "the big 3" all have to release their new consoles within a year of each other. I think someone from Sony said this, and it's true, that Microsoft will mess up the generation of when games come out if they don't all release around the same time. It would mess everything up if the 3rd Xbox came out like 3 years before PS4. I'd prefer their all released within 6 months of each other and no longer than a year after the other console coming out.

The later the better. These systems are expensive and I want developers to squeeze as much out of them as possible before they get replaced. If we get new consoles in 2010, I'm bailing out and becoming a PC gamer exclusively. 2011 is the earliest I'd be looking to buy a new machine.

Why would you do that? PC's are even worse, you have to constantly upgrade those every year or two.

That simply isn't true... at least not in the sense that you mean it. You might swap out a part or two, but it isn't like you have to replace your entire setup to stay relevant.

Winter 2012 would probably be the best time......

though I would like it a bit later........

I've bought too much for this generation: $60 games (not to mention expensive Special editions), Accessories and the most expensive of all: dowloads of games and other media.

So the big thing is: How do you make a smooth transition from this generation to the next so no one gets frustrated? First of all, the consoles must be fully backwards compatible so everyone can enjoy their last gen games with ease. Another thing is to to able to transfer all your memory, downloads and saves to the next console.

Ok, I don't know why I said all that but I felt like I had to...

Not really... I've purchased 4 360s because three of them died out of warranty early on, one PS3, and one Wii... that adds up if you are only getting 4-6 years out of them...

I've spent $2450 on hardware this gen. I don't think I'd spend that much maintaining a gaming rig.

I agree. I want to transfer my gamertag, and PSN name as well as saves, achievements, DLC, and etc... and if Playstation Home is cool, I want my Home to be waiting for me when I fire up my PS4.

2-3 years. I'm sure the graphics will start to look dated by that point and I'll be ready for something new.

Totally! It's cool for those who have a PS3 and choose not to upgrade yet and can still interact with those who have a PS4 through home.

All your consoles breaking doesn't really count. PC parts break too. Let's say over 20 years no parts break at all for PC and consoles, I feel you'd save money being a console gamer.

Well I'd like Nintendo to release ASAP, because their tech is already dated as hell and will only get worse in the next few years. Sadly, with how much money they're making on Wii, that's not gonna happen. They'll milk that cow as long as they can....it'll rival Gameboy milkage if it keeps selling well.

Microsoft...well the rumor is a new Xbox is already underway, with a planned 2010 release (2 years from now, 5th anniversary of the 360). This is listed in OXM. I'd be into that if they made sure it was a durable machine this time, improved the feature set of Live, and shipped the machine at a good price, maybe including both a normal Xbox pad and the rumored Wii-style controller so developers can use whatever is best for them. No doubt it would also have Blu-ray drives (probably what they were talking to Sony about).

Sony... I really can't say. They've seemed lost this entire generation so far, and the PS3 really hasn't acheived an identity like the PS1 or PS2 yet. The PS3 will seem like a huge failure if they released a new machine anytime soon. But if the competition forces them to act, they may have to. I think they'd LIKE to keep the PS3 around until at least a point where its more affordable and can be considered a success. But how long will that take?

All in all it seems like Microsoft is in the best position to choose a course of action for new hardware.

I disagree. I'm primarily a console gamer now, but the cost of the hardware, plus paying $10 more per game adds up. I buy somewhere around 30 games a year, most of them are available on the PC but I buy the console versions which means that I'm spending an extra $300 a year for no real reason... multiply that by your magic 20 years number and it means you'd spend an extra $6000 on games in 20 years... and let's say you wanted to be an XBL subscriber, that would be an additional $1000. Not to mention free mods vs microtransactions. Don't get me wrong, I love console gaming, but I'm paying a premium price for it.

It's 2008 now. The PS3 was released in 2006, Sony will probably release a new system by 2010-2012 same with MS, don't know/care when Wii came out so I don't know when they'll be releasing a Wii II

I really don't think we'll see the PS4 in 2010. Sony's all about the 10 year lifecycle of their consoles, and replacing the PS3 after 4 years doesn't support that.

Also, the Wii is at an affordable price and the games are just 40 to 50 bucks so I don't mind Nintendo bringing out a new console very soon.

Fine by me, I don't wanna buy a new PS3 (or any console) anytime soon, spent $450 on this one I want it to last at least 3-4 yrs. I'm predicting the next one to be at $649.99-$699.99

The only problem(s) I have with the Wii are:

1) Games are focused more on the children (no GTA?? wtf??)

2) Graphics aren't next-gen.

3) Best game(s) on it are the Mario ones, but there are too many! That crazy Italian is starting to annoy me!! Besides did anyone notice he eats 'shrooms? Does that make him a druggy? Cause in Super Mario World on GB colour, when he ate one he grew bigger an lights started to flash, talk about getting high.

While I wouldn't be opposed to the rumoured 2010 launch of a new Microsoft system I'd probably be satisfied with a 2011 launch instead. I don't think I'd like to wait any longer then that.

For Nintendo I just recently picked up a Wii and since it launched a year later then the 360 I'd say that either a 2011 or 2012 date for them to release a new system would be fine with me. Even though it's not as powerful as the other two systems I am having alot of fun with it right now and wouldn't mind seeing how things further develop for it.

Pretty same thing as Nintendo in regards to Sony launching a new system with a 2011 or 2012. Perhaps 2012 moreso for me since while the PS3 is moving along it feels kind of a bit slow to me and I'd like to see how things develop for it.

While it's hard to say for certain if the PS3 will have a 10 year life-cycle I seriously doubt that Sony won't release the next system until those 10 years have passed. Just because developers may still continue to develop for the PS3 for 10 years doesn't mean that Sony won't feel a need to release a new console especially if Microsoft and Nintendo release more powerful systems.

I'd prefer their all released within 6 months of each other and no longer than a year after the other console coming out.MM87
Don't bank on that one. Sony preached that same thing with the PS2 and Nintendo was talking big about an 8 year life span for the Gamecube back in the day. The fact of the matter is the "loser" in this generation will push out their next console first in an attempt to stop the bleeding and make a run at profitability, just like Microsoft did with the 360. And once one console comes out the other two manufactureers will have to follow suit.

Personally I'd be fine if it took another 5 years before a new console came out. The Wii's graphics becoming more and more dated is the only thing that could make me hope for a new batch of consoles. Other than that I'd much rather keep playing great games on my current systems rather than plunking down another thousand on new systems and accessories. The more time that goes by between those massive investments the better.

4 more years would be good enough, and i dont mean leftover low grade filler games, 4yr intense fun filled years, with numerous grad A games. its way to early to swap consoles now, i havent even played as many 360 games as i did on ps2.

Exactly. The more powerful the machines get, the more elaborate games are expected by gamers, and much more time needs to be invested in them by developers to complete the game. We've had several games that have been in development since before any of the current consoles were even released, including some big names, that have only seen recent release. Halo 3 released almost 2 years after launch. GTA4, two and a half years. Dark Sektor was apparently the first game announced for this generation of hardware, and has only just been released. I think MGS 4 was announced in 2004, and is still yet to hit.

Given the longer lead times for titles, I think we are still early in this generation, and that we have not seen the best yet with what developers can do with the current platforms. I'm sure if you look at a range of first year PS2 games, you won't find anything that compares with the likes of God of War 2.

Who will be first? My guess is Microsoft. Multiplatform games look similar now, but in a year or two I imagine that developers will start taking more advantage of what the PS3 has to offer. It could be Nintendo, but not until the Wii stops selling, and I don't think it will for the next couple of years.

In any case, I'm hoping for no sooner than 2012. It probably doesn't really matter. I'm guessing there will still be plenty of support for the current generation for a few years after the launch of any new systems.

First of all, I would like to see some changes, even if that means that the big 3 become the big 4. Apart from that, I think there's tons of performance they can still squeeze out of the 360 and the ps3, while the Wii and the DS could have a 20 year lifecycle if Nintendo wanted them to.

No time soon. My wallet can't take it :D Actually 2012 seems like a good year. I thought there was still some life in the previous consoles (XBox and PS2 anyway) when the new stuff came out, so I'd like these to last a little longer. Either way I won't be jumping in until I'm ready and feel like I have gotten everything I wanted out of what I own.

I would tolerate a Holiday 2010 release for the new Xbox, that way it would have a life of 5 years. But I'd wait and buy it 'til Holiday 2011, this way, I would have a year to replay all my 360 games and squeeze all the juice that's left in them.

3 to 4 years (for non sequel games) is probably the average development time for most games. How can developers catch up when the big companies keep bringing out new consoles so soon?

I also believe that developers could have done a lot more with the original xbox. But MS decided to kill it early so we will never know. I hope they don't do the same with 360 as they will fire up a mob of angry consumers and developers. Hell, if that happens, I will personally throw a brick at Steve Ballmer's face.....yeah I know he's not responsible for it, but still!!!

I don't want a new generation of consoles until about a third of the way through the next decade. I'd like this one, with the exception of the Wii, to last as long as the PS2 has to date, honestly. I have a Wii, but I want a PS3, yet it's still very expensive and hasn't become worthy of the PS name. Developers need more time to make more games and the PS3 needs large, respectable library.

Heh, I haven't even moved into the next gen yet. Despite the Wii being current gen hardware, it is, tech-wise (internally), a part of last gen, and then I also have a PS2. I really don't want to get a console at or near the end of its life cycle, so I hope the current gen keeps chugging well past the point I get a PS3.

I'm jumping on the, around 2015 train. I just bought my PS3, and have had my 360 for only a little longer. Wii's are still hard to find in stores.

I don't want to buy one anytime soon, at least not till after this decade. I think they have a TON more life to them. Just look at PS2, and Metal Gear Solid. Compare Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Solid 2. BIG DIFFERENCE!

I am very much looking forward, to what will be released after 2008. But I am worried about M$. I could so see them spitting out another console just to port some more games again, and sell another plastic paperweight for massive profit. It is M$ after all.....
