Gamecube has already been moved to a rack in the toward the back of the store, while Xbox has a small spot on the wall at the back. I suspect that support for both will be pulled early into 2009 so they can blow out the consoles and games cheap at the end of the year around Christmas.
PS2, Its hard to tell. You have a huge userbase of people who have PS2's and a decent amount of support from third party publishers. As long as it gets games why not? EB still had a PSone section till recently.
They will probably keep selling them as long as they come in. You figure they give maybe one or two dollars store credit for a game and sell it between five and ten dollars, it's just good economics.Second_Rook
I believe it's called extortion/capitalism. That's a personal argument for a different forum, but hey...
Anyway, like many have said before, when they stop getting support for the games they resell back to customers/suckers, that's when we'll see them drop the games. I think I got pretty much every title I wanted for GC, Xbox360 has Halo and will eventually have Halo 2 for download, so I'm covered there, as for PS2, I'm not too worried. I suspect some of those titles will be downloadable from the PS3 store at some point or another, or PS4.
Digital downloads are the future. It's just the natural evolution, similar to mp3's. I suspect at some point or another, all titles will be distributed thusly from every competing system. Is it there yet? Unfortunately, no, but I estimate within the following decade this will just be the way it is. As for the retail system and mass-market stores, they will play a part, much like how you buy an mp3 player from a specific chain. But for the games, it just makes sense, both from a profit sense, and a business sense, to do it this way. You open your doors to small-market publishers, and keep the door open to the larger ones.
Do you know how expensive it is to publish, market, and if successful, ship a game to a given site is?
Sorry I got off track there, but yeah, in terms of here and now, I suppose 2 years for GC and Xbox. Who knows how long for PS2. "We'll just take off backwards compatibility to save money..." Good plan Sony. Great. Defeat what you started in the first place. A PS3 with no backwards compatibility. Man that just doesn't sit well with me. And yes I am aware of the 80 gig model having CHOICE emulation ability.
Gamecube is generally the least supported console at Gamestop. The games (at least the good ones) are harder to find and are more expensive then they should be. There is a small rack, with about 200 games dedicated to the Gamecube at my local stores.
Xbox has the big bargin bin with hundreds of games. Most are under $15, even the best games. The xbox is the cheapest system to collect games for. The system is still rather pricey considering it's been abandoned for so long. There is no shortage of games for the Xbox.
The PS2 has the largest section next to the Xbox 360. There are just so many games for this system, it is ridiculous. Most of the games are cheap but there are still some that cost full retail price.
They will probably be there until they sell out. One Ebgames near my parents house still had some PS1 games as of last year but they were mainly bad sports games from the late 90's.
well considering the fact that the gamestop in my area didnt drop ps1 or n64 games until the release of the wii and ps3 i give it until the ps4 and next nintendo system. im still waiting for gamestop to stop selling gameboy games though... they have a whole case devoted to them...its kinda weird...
it does seem as if they aren't "featuring" the games anymore, and they are moving towards the bargain rack...though the ps2 section is still the largest by far (almost half the store) they are SLOWLY being phased out...VERY SLOWLY...

Usually, but even now, the amount of them is dwindling.
