The same reason why sony didn't kill off the PS1 when PS2 was already out. It makes money. The same will go for the PS3 when they release a PS4, sony will keep making money off of the PS3 even when it looks like everyone has bought the latest and greatest system. This is the thing that hurt MS, they killed off the Xbox way to soon. If they would have kept it going even after the release of the 360 they would have still made money off of it. I'm still spending money on PS2 and Xbox games even though I have a PS3 and 360 elite. I still like to play my PS2 and Xbox games just as much as I do the new systems.
No. If it was dead I wouldn't see a PS2 New section in my Gamestop anymore. But like I said, I wish they would at least try to include PS2 compatibility with the slim models (PS3), like they do with the PS1. Also, the PS2 technically hasn't changed a bit since it first came out. No firmware updates, no Memory Cards bigger than 8MB, no more online support, nothing.Hasn't it already died? I mean I never hear of any games coming out for it anymore.

I didn't know they still made games for that system. Reminds me of how the NES survived a few years into the next generation after its.
Same, but consumers don't always research this far. That being said, if they wanted BC, they should search it up and buy an old one.I don't know why people still want to purchase a PS2 when they can easily purchase a non-PS3 Slim model and get the same thing...

I would say the PS2 will die in 2011. currently only a Baseball game MLB The Show 2011and WWE Superstars are the only 2011 PS2 games to come. That doesn't mean that there won't be a few in the 2nd/3rd/and 4th quarters of 2011. Sony will likely annouce it is stopping production of PS2 this year.
My guessSony will officially"can" the Playstation 2 in October 2011. But the PS2 has out sold the PSPGo in Japan. So it is hard to say when it will "die"
PS2 doesn't need to die. It's ok, but everything else is better.
That being said, I think this time in 2-3 years nobody will use it.
I think ps2 will be around for like 5 years minimum, consoles like this with good games like xenosaga series. Will not die that easly!

Most people don't buy the newly release games. Theres tons pf ps2 games compared to this gen and most imo is better than this gen except for a few
It didn't die, some games are still being released for it, like MLB 2011. The 1st xbox died though(I rarely play it).Hasn't it already died? I mean I never hear of any games coming out for it anymore.

TC: I'm guessing it will die when PS4 comes out. As of right now, most people are playing the ps3 and will hop into the PS4. Alot of people used to play the PS2.
I still enjoy playing the PS2, I won't say more than but at least as much as the PS3. There are a lot of great games for it and plenty more come out every year. If it's still sucessful, there's no reason for it to die yet. The PS2 has been, I believe, the longest selling system since the NES. It's lasted over ten years, and it's still going. If it's still good, and people still like it, why not keep it going?
Because then people like me won't be able to hook them up to our TVs using a HD connection.I still enjoy playing the PS2, I won't say more than but at least as much as the PS3. If you're worried about HD then the PS2 is probably not for you. My TV has hook ups for any system, whether HD or not so owning an HD TV is no reason not to still play my PS2.

I have a HDTV as well but it only runs at 480p. I don't even have Component cables for it.1) In 2010 - 7 MILLION PS2s were sold.
2) By the time they bring back BC for PS3, the PS4 will be out. Sony screwed itself out of the largest console base in gaming history, I know I'll never buy a PS3
3) PS2 has sold 150 million units - neither the PS3 or the 360 are gonna even come close.
4) I have more than 90 PS2 games, almost half are backlog, and any current generation games that are any good - I get for PC, plus all the PC games that aren't on consoles.
5) The PS2 has more than 100 RPGs, the PS3 has less than 30
So why hasn't the PS2 died - because current gen doesn't have the games, that's why.
