Like many of you, I am so tired of FPS games, specifically military FPS games being massed produced nearly every month. Don't get me wrong, I loved this genre up until a few years ago when every game started trying to be CoD and Halo. I would love to see the FPS genre go dormant for a while seeing how it is currently making it hard for me to even enjoy games like Perfect Dark and Half Life 2 which I have loved for years. So when do you feel the FPS fad will end or will it ever end?

I personally dont see it ending here to soon due to alot of reasons. I guess another reason why it lasted so long is because lets be honest there easy to get into compare to games like ninja gaiden or disgaea. Personally i could jump into any FPS and know what im doing in a matter of seconds compare to most genre. Plus most Fps dont take alot of thinking powers just poing and shoot for the most part.

I've never been too fond of it. They are also easier for game developers, because they are poorly animated from what I have seen. The bad guys have no detail and the protagonist does not require much thought except for the arms.

maybe fad is the wrong word, but FPS games are by far more popular then they were just 5 or 6 years ago, particularly military FPS games. It was cool, but now it's just getting old and stale imo

^ that you maturing and looking for something different. try different genre or play games that you never got to play before for example im playing the silent hill series for the first time. Yeah the Fps crowd has grown do to the fact more people play games now then 5 or 6 years ago and because of it newer people are going to play thing that are usaully popular like COD, Halo, and BF2. plus you also got reviewers that push game like dishonor and bioshock as the next big thing. though the last few years have been better in my opinion considering fighting and adventure game (though some still shooters) has been on the rise once again.

I think there is already fatigue setting in, but I also think it will be a while (at least two years, and around the time of the next generation) that something else comes along from another genre that becomes the next big thing.

Remember back when like 90% of games were side-scrolling platformers? That didn't last forever and I don't think this will either.

You mean like how adventure games and platformers were all the rage but they're not being manufactured as much as they used to? The problem with games back then were because quality control was a dime a dozen, and people were pushing out those games to die while the standouts stood the test of time and became franchises, or just simply memorable, leaving consumers with few choices. These days, we have way more quality games to choose from, and people just simply choose the hottest shooters, thus encouraging the making of quality shooter games over anything else. So shooters are here to stay, for better or worse, whether you like it or not. Oh, and don't knock FPSs based on two or three franchises, there are plenty of great games that aren't military CoD/BF or Halo.

It won't. People are fascinated by warfare and violence, getting to simulate these situations empowers them. Just look at how well games that are -essentially- the same sell each year: Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Crysis, etc.

How is every game trying to be CoD/Halo making it hard for you to enjoy a game that is clearly not either of those? Does CoD or Halo come to your house and flaunt itself in your face while you play Half Life 2? Not trying to bash you, just trying to understand your logic on it.

While they've certainly become more popular I really don't mind myself because I really enjoy them and a lot of them are excellent games. Also there's still tons of other great games that keep coming out for other genres that I've really enjoyed as well.

I don't know about you, but if something is thrown in my face enough I tend to have an adverse reaction to it. In this case it's the FPS genre. I go to my local game stores, tons of newer FPS games, I come on this site and there are tons of ads and posts about FPSes (includind this one lol). They are just everywhere and it is really getting old, redunant and boring imo. So when I try to enjoy games like Half Life or Perfect Dark, it's hard not to resent them because they belong to this over saturated genre. I know it might sound strange, but that's how it makes me feel.

Doom and Wolfenstein started F.P.S back in the days of D.O.S. If you do not like the genre, then go play W.O.W. of Diablo 3.

roulettethedog

I have nothing against the genre, in fact several of my all time favorite games are FPS games. My problem is the over saturation of FPS games for about 4 or 5 years now. I's feel the same way if it were JRPGs, Space Shooters, or platformers, I'm just tired of one genre being at the forefront and want a change in the most populat genre.

It's a genre that won't die out, but it does have those certain trends that explode then fade like the World War 2 setting games that started with medal of honor. Remember when that trend slowed, you could feel the over-saturation in the market, and then Modern Warfare came in and sold like hotcakes. So, since there is a noticeable saturation point right now, it probably just needs that hotcakes product to end the trend. Or maybe the introduction of new consoles will shift the trend.

FPS won't die out for a long time. They're easy to play so most people would rather pick up then a game that will chalange and frustrate them (average joe doesn't like chalanges XD ). it doesn't bug me so long as other genres are being made.

Oh it will end, just like Activision churned out Guitar Hero sequels until absolutely nobody could stand the sight of it any more, they'll do exactly the same thing with Call of Duty and the shooter market in general. I anticipate it will take another 3 years though. Hopefully less.

FPS games won't be going anywhere. It is an easily accessible genre, and when made well they can be terribly fun to play.

a genre is not a fad. FPS games themselves are not going to "end" or "become dormant". That's just silly. That being said I too am tired of the direction the CoD games and games like them have taken the industry in.

A way to kill the FPS community is to make the game so that you have to play through the single player before you're allowed to play multiplayer. That would kill off all the casuals

No, fad is definitely the right word to use. (among many other words you could use. lol)

"Afadis any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period."

That behavior is that most gamers are buying into these FPS games.

I'm sick of it too, and I cannot stress this enough. Developers need to start making more original games.

Once you've played one shooter, you've played them all. It makes me sick that so many people are still convinced that all these shooters being produced today are fun and unique from each other.

These damn dude-bro gamers who keep buying shooters are ruining gaming for the rest of us.

As much as I'd like it to end too, I don't see it happening anytime soon. They attract way too many people by focusing on setpieces, being cinematic, and having simple to get into gameplay.

This is a little bit of a misconception about FPS games though...not all of them are pure shooters. Fallout, Skyrim, and Condemned are all examples of FPS games that aren't pure shooters.

Just because dude-bro gamers enjoy them doesn't mean you have to. I agree that dude-bro gamers are annoying, but I don't care if developers make the games, I just won't buy them/play them.

This question was asked 1year 4months, ago and it's an even better question to ask now. Look at the X1/PS4 lineups at launch, it's basically sports and these FPS games that are just demos with multiplayer. Why would a company build a complex game with progression and a detailed story when they can just throw the FPS crowd in a room together and let them entertain themselves?

I hope this FPS fad, (demos with multiplayer) dies before Virtual Reality kills it. Who would chose to play in the floating camera mode with a gun hovering in your face, when you can play in actual first person view (Virtual Reality)? It's pretty clear the days are numbered for the boring FPS games. You can only release the same thing over and over again for so long, before people get tired of it.

PS: I've played CoD Ghosts and BF4 for a few days now and the multiplayer is already repetitive boredom. The only gem in this next-gen console launch is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. This is a true open world game with a surprising amount of content. I have played the previous Assassin's Creed games and did not like them near as much as this one. Hopefully games like this are the future and the hollow FPS games are just a sad memory.

I don't pay much attention to standard shooters these days but I don't turn my back on them completely. Last one I played was Farcry 3, I think it was Killzone 3 before that with a large gap between. I think Killzone 3 put me off them for a long time, but Farcry 3 showed me it's nothing more then a perspective at the end of the day, still room for a good game to be built upon it.

Anything with Call of Duty or Battlefield written on a teal and orange box with a soldier doesn't get so much as a glance. I'm glad they make those easy to identify. Like a poison dart frog.

Then don't buy FPS games. It really is that easy.

Honestly, why do you care? How does it personally effect you?

Personally I really dislike the big budget special effects laden mindless summer blockbuster action movies, so I don't watch them. I don't post pointless threads because if I don't like something I simply pay it no mind. I don't spend my free time dwelling on it and forcing myself to focus on something I get no pleasure from because Id rather spend my free time focusing on things I do enjoy.

It's not so much that I'm tired of shooters. I'm tired of the fad mechanic duck behind cover, aim where an npc last popped out his head, a few seconds later his head pops out with the same animation, you shoot him in the head, next target.
