Between the PS2, XBOX, and GameCube, which system did you like better for multiplayer?

For me, between the GameCube and PS2, I'm going to pick GameCube. I always thought it was annoying to buy extra attachments for extra controller ports (then again, this comes from someone who played more Nintendo consoles than Sony consoles, but still) and for games like TimeSplitters 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2, it's really efficient.

Not saying the PS2 didn't have great multiplayer, but the multitap always turned me off.

Xbox--NO CONTEST. The best local and online multiplayer by far. You could even do both at the same time.

Xbox, easily. I used to go to 12-16 player Halo LAN parties with my friends, and then when Xbox Live came out, there was PGR2, Crimson Skies, Mech Assault, and of course, Halo 2.

Gamecube had the best couch co-op for me. PS2 only had two controller ports without multitap and I was never into online back then, so Xbox didn't get much multiplayer time except for Halo CE competetive matches with friends.

PS2 I only play multiplayer with friends at my house or their house so the XBox's great internet community really didn't do much for me. Played tons of fighting games like the DBZ games, the WWE games, One Piece games, and other fighting games.

I will go with Playstation 2. Xbox really took off with on-line multiplayer, but I personally prefer PS2.

If you are talking about online multiplayer then Xbox obviously, but Gamecube otherwise because of Super Smash Bros Melee.

It's between Dreamcast and XBox, because of SegaNET and XBox Live. Gamecube and PS2 aren't even in the competition, especially PS2 since not only did it not have an online network, but it also only had 2 controller ports for local multiplayer while every other system that generation had 4.

I say it's a tie between both Dreamcast and XBox. I played a crapload of Halo 2 on XBox Live, but I also played a crapload of Quake III arena and Unreal Tournament on SegaNET.

Oddly the Gamecube is the most interesting online, but overall it's the Xbox I side with, with the Dead or Alive Ultimate spectate feature it really shut the game down w/that one.

I never really knew many people with xboxs. A lot of my time was spent on my PS2, that being said. When we got to playing some good old local multiplayer, the cube was where it was at. Smash, Timesplitters 2, mario kart .... just too many awesome multiplayer games with easy 4 person support without that annoying multitap. I suppose online would be xbox, but I never really play any online in gen6. I was playing Quake and UT and Counterstrike on the PC at that point in time.

I never bought an xbox so I played on PS2. I only played Socom when it came to multiplaying, so the PS2 was the right choice for me.

For local Gamecube > Dreamcast > PS2 > Xbox For network Xbox > PS2 > Dreamcast > Gamecubefamicommander

PS2 better than XBox for local multiplayer? The PS2 only has 2 controller ports. It's really only good for 1-on-1 stuff, like fighting games.

And how is the PS2 better than Dreamcast for network? Dreamcast had SegaNET, which easily trumps anything online PS2 had going.

There isn't much more on the XBOX when it comes to local though, even with the 4 ports. The PS2 had tons of games, and if they supported 4 players any cheap multitap (got mine for like 10 euros + controller, new) would deal with the lack of 4 ports. Sure, having to buy a multitap is a turn off, but you still get a truckload of good local PS2 games in trade for it.

DreamCast, but of the list, I'd say it would have to be PS2, then Xbox, then GameCube with the least amount of multiplayer I played. It was actually the previous generation - mainly the original PlayStation where my last most-fond memories of multiplayer come from.

PS2 supports four controllers via multitap and overwhelms Xbox based on sheer number of quality titles. And Dreamcast was mostly limited to dial up connections as broadband adapters are extremely rare. Add that to the short lifespan and relatively few quality online titles and PS2 is the clear winner. Just making broadband easily available is a huge advantage.

Relatively few quality online titles? Vs. PS2? Are you freaking kidding?! Phantasy Star Online, Quake III Arena, and Unreal Tournament were all incredible online experiences, plus you had the normal racing and sports online games as well as plenty of others thanks to the ease of SegaNET. What did PS2 have? A bad online Final Fantasy game and a racing game? Now if you're saying that there are more single-player experiences on PS2 vs. Dreamcast, that I can agree with.

And the dial-up connection really didn't slow things down on Dreamcast, amazingly enough. I rarely experienced lag.

I also dare you to show me a multiplayer game on PS2 that can compare to Halo 1 & 2. Gamecube has Super Smash Bros., but I can't think of a multiplayer game on PS2 that can compete, well except Marvel vs. Capcom 2 but that's also on XBox.

Now you're just making it look worse than it really is. The PS2 also had Quake III and Unreal Tournament, I'm just not sure if the PS2 version supported online, but they did have up to 4 players, sure, it's a huge downpoint compared to the Dreamcast, so I still kinda agree on that part. But saying the PS2 only had a bad online Final Fantasy game and a racing game? Here's some good online games on the PS2: Area 51 Ark the Lad End of Darkness Resident Evil Outbreak Files Champions of Norrath Jak X (say what you want, but it was a fun racing/car combat game) Monster Hunter and it's sequels Phantasy Star Universe (Although it doesn't compare to the Dreamcast's PSO) Ratchet and Clank games (had fun as hell online play) SOCOM Games (Just those games online community lived almost as long, if not even longer that the XBOX itself) Twisted Metal Black Online And then you have a crapload of racing games/sport games just like the DC does. Not saying ALL of those can compare, but you sure are making it look much inferior than it really is.

Few things: 1. The reason you didn't notice dial up lag back then is because you had no basis for comparison, and also because many games "fudged" it and much of what you were seeing wasn't actually happening in real time. 2. PS2 network games: List It's not even a question, dude.
