I just want to know what to avoid.
Final Fantasy 13. Shite gameplay, storyline is boring and underwhelming, characters are annoying. It is regarded as one of the least favourite Final Fantasy games ever.
How far back are you willing to play FF games? Is FF1-5 in your radar? Is spinoff ok with you?
Anyhow, mine is:
FF8 - Love triple triad best minigame and game is still highly enjoyable but to me the stat build up its all bullshit. Read online how to raise stat and why lvl 1 is better than lvl 99
FFX-2 - It has a great combat but the lvling in this game can be obtuse and story is forgettable. Some of the most horrendous JRPG clothing ever worn to be found.
FF13/Lighting Returns - world building is superb and personally gameplay is actually amazing. But game world design was terrible and the lore of many things is hidden in texts. Boring.
FF Type 0 - some people love the game and maybe you will too. Personally the way they told the story was crap and requires 2 playthrough to understand fully. Gameplay was terrible. First FF to be rated M though.
Final Fantasy 15 sucks so much.
The world is vacant as a parking lot. The combat kinda sucks. The characters and plot aren't very interesting and its just so dull and im not into it.
I would have said Final Fantasy II (PS1/PSP) it takes some use to get through both the main story and battle system
Final Fantasy VIII.
Taken from the comments I made about the game in my Stacks list:
So, I definitely have mixed feelings towards this game. The events that took place in disc 1 I’d say were pretty good. A nice setup to put it simply. Promising beginnings for sure. But, the 3 discs after it I feel very conflicted about in terms of my overall enjoyment and just in general where the game kind of went with things from a storytelling perspective. It was, mostly boring. Another problem is that, when certain pieces of the puzzle started to add up, I just felt as if it didn’t fit with the aesthetic of the game. Like, it wasn’t contributing enough to the story to the point where you as a player felt satisfied or cared. Random you could almost say. The villain especially I didn’t think was menacing enough. Travelling around the world map is incredibly tedious and slow. Found myself running into dead ends constantly. It definitely feels much more empty than 7’s. By the start of disc 4, I couldn’t defeat Adel and I just thought that I’ve spent enough time with it to know that there’s no point in completing it.
I’m still debating if I like the games or not... I find they take no skill to play but the graphics and soundtracks are great, the story is usually pretty good, just the gameplay is so mindless. FFXV has way too many side quests and pointless missions. For some reason I haven’t given up on it yet though.
The one where Yuna sings - it’s bad enough we have to look at her, nobody wants to hear her as well.
I've been playing FF since 1 on the NES, the only ones I have not played are X/X-2 and 15. I tend to strongly prefer the retro style FF games, so my opinion of them has really depreciated. I have the X collection and plan to work through that one soon.
VIII gets an honorable mention, and that's sad because there is some great stuff in this game. The shortcomings are well-documented just like the things they did well; the biggest gripe I had was the story. What an absolute clusterf*** it becomes towards the end. Straight up silly.
I actually quit 13 about halfway through, which is something I rarely do once I've put that much time in. There was really nothing good about that game; I would consider it to be easily the worst of the group but I haven't played 15. 12 also disappointed me. There are enough features (MMO feel, good characters, interesting enough plot, great environments) to keep it interesting but the combat never felt right to me, the level-up system is needlessly complex and the dungeons were extremely boring & repetitive.
Those 3 would all be mentioned in my list but 13 would take the cake.
