I think the best in the series is Portrait of Ruin. It features two playable characters that you can switch between at any time, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. It combined the adventure elements of Symphony of the Night while maintaining its own story and the best boss battles (especially the final battle against Dracula and Death) of any game in the series. I know some people didn't like the Mega Man style revisiting of previous levels near the end, but I thought it was a decent diversion from the some of the previous offerings. Symphony of the Night set the standard, but Portrait of Ruin used the formula to near perfection.

As far as the direction the series should take, I would like to see a game based on the adventures of Grant. He could travel throughout a haunted pirate ship and end up in the clock tower or castle to face Dracula, who killed his family before Castlevania III. His agility and ability to climb on the walls should remain but his usage of weapons and number of weapons he could use would be greatly improved.

Symphony of the Night is still the best, as far as I'm concerned.

Where should the series go from now? Back onto consoles, that's where. I'm tired of all the good stuff getting relegated to handhelds.

Aria or Dawn of Sorrow. No argument. Console versions are ok (except N64), but the 2.5D is where it shines. Maybe if they made a side scrolling HD Castlevania for 360 or PS3 I'd be interested. Until then, stickin to the 'helds.

Super IV.

I think Castlevania should go back to the old format. I liked Symphony of the Night and everything, but I don't like where the series has gone since then.

I agree with Super IV.

Although the exploration and rpg elements of SOTN are great, I really liked the more action oriented level-by-level gameplay.

I think the series should go back to a level-by-level design. I'd like more dynamic action and no backtracking. I'd like to use the whip to deflect bones thrown at you, disarm enemies, and pull their weapons to you.

I...honestly don't know what my favorite Castlevania is...

My favorite handheld one is Ecclesia, I suppose. That might just be because I'm in the middle of playing it, though. :P

Symphony of the Night is still the epitome of the 2D "Castleroid"/"Metroivania" styIe while Rondo of Blood is the epitome of the 2D "Belmont" styIe. Every major 2D entry in the series to come after those two have been of lesser quality and not on par with how great they are.

The next step the series should be taking is building on the elements that Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness debuted in the 3D realm. They showed so much potential for greatness yet suffered from being 2D games in 3 dimensions. SOTN2 (the PS3/360 installment features Alucard and is the next major entry in the series... its SOTN2) is hopefully going to be Curse of Darkness only better. The stealing, combining and I.D.'s are element I very much want to be in there... since they are the reason I keep going back and playing CoD.

What also needs to be a "for-sure" is having Michiru Yamane in for music and Ayami Kojima in for art design. If those two aren't there, they aren't "Castlevania" games.
