Get a Dreamcast, it has way too many good arcade game ports in many genres, like fighting, shooters, puzzle, racing, etc. Also you can always give games a try on dreamcast before buying them, since it can play selfbooting discs that are on the net. It's a dead console, i don't think anyone would mind if you try that
Get the Atari 2600. You can get it and its games for really cheap on ebay, and you'll own a genuine collector's item, a piece of history that would impress anyone/everyone with a brain. Atari 2600 all the way.
Atari 7800, Intellivision with a voice module, Vectrex, Fairchild Channel F, Sega Master System, and a Magnavox Odyssey 2 if you can locate one of those.
