I don't really remember the stories to the games i've played except God of War. I thought that story was alright. Nothing AWESOME, but not totally bad either.
For stories: Final Fantasy series, Diablo II, Neverwinter Nights series, Silent Hill and Resident Evil series (for horror stories), Prince of Persia Trilogy (SoT-T2T)
Metal Gear series. Kojima knows how to write a story, and get his ideaology out to those who play it. I loved MGS2(my favorite of the series thus far), and progressing through the story really made me think of a lot of things in life.
Zelda stories are good, and I always like the final battles between Link and Ganon/Ganondorf. I also am a fan of most FF stories. The Tales series and Wild Arm games can have stories that get me interested, as well. As for my favorite, I have no idea.
I think the best game I've ever played for storyline was Final Fantasy VIII - that really blew my mind, especially the space scene. The original Metal Gear Solid was very good also, but in a different league to the Final Fantasy games.
