I was wondering since I like this in a game! Its kind of a prologue to the real game. Remember the first movie in LOTR where Frodo is in the SHire and then suddenly dark forces comes and he has to flee!

Which games start up peacefully, without the hero knowing the evil that goes on in the land, and then suddenly something happens and he has to go out on a world saving quest?

The only game I can think of at the moment is The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess! There is a whole hour where you are just in a peaceful village doing errands and such.

Which other games have a similar kind of start?

Better question is: which game DOESN'T start you in a peaceful setting? Seriously, idyllic life torn asunder by outside forces is lesson 1 in Video Game Cliches.

Most war games, or shooters in general.

Yep. There are tons of games where it starts out with everybody happy and butterflies and rainbows only to have something terrible happen. From Ecco the Dolphin to Zelda to Ninja Gaiden to Kingdom Hearts to Mario to Half-Life to Halo to Final Fantasy, you shouldn't have a hard time finding it show up in games at all. Just go down to a video game store with a blindfold and grab something, and as long as it isn't a sports or puzzle game, you probably got a game fitting that description.

If you are getting fable then aim for the PC version - it has a few additional chapters.

Pretty much every RPG ever made honestly. :P

Fable is pretty much along the lines of what you said, as well as many others.

As others have said, Fable is perfect. As is The Hobbit game. Pretty much all of Mario Sunshine is peaceful and relaxing. Wind Waker I think is the best Zelda game for this sort of thing.
