I dont think anyone has ever really answered this question. My personal opinion after having played all GTA's the best of them all has to be San Andreas. Post your opinions on this thread

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say GTA 2. Sure the game had that horrible birds eye view, but it was awesome for the time. GTA 3 was a defining moment in GTA history that really made the franchise take off, but if you played the first and second ones before GTA 3 was even thought of, you know that GTA 2 was the best. The new ones have vastly better graphics and are way more immersive, but the second one really solidified my love for the franchise.
As of now, GTA IV. For it's designated time, GTA 3. It's what took the series out of it's Dark Age by transition from birds eye to 3D Third Person.
This has become a cliche' topic now, so I'm going to post my top three favorites. My favorite so far is "Grand Theft Auto IV", second is "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas", and third is "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."
GTAIV >>> GTA: Vice City > GTA: San Andrea >> GTAIII
I still love all of them though but IMO GTAIV was almost perfect!
I have to say GTA IV.It might be poorly optimized but that doesn't stop it for being one of the greatest of the GTA series.
GTA 3; it was far more than anyone could possibly have expected. It was an absolutely incredible milestone for it's time.
It had everything; interesting city design, great music, humour, missions, broad choice of (public) transport, and IMO the best character to play as.
I still find myself roaming around Liberty City every now and then.
The jetpack missions in San Andreas were awsome, I mean you could fly by really low target a car or an anything and just blow it up. It will be awsome if they did a remake of san andreas in HD
San Andreas by far. It has the best missions, the best gameplay, the most fun stuff to do outside of the main story, it's the biggest, the most varied, has the best story and the best soundtrack. GTA IV has a few things over San Andreas such as combat controls, the gps system, the replay mission option and the awesome multiplayer, but thats about it. Vice City and all the other GTA games have pretty much nothing on San Andreas. The soundtrack of Vice City is pretty sweet though. I could certainly see why someone would prefer Vice Citys soundtrack but I prefer the one in San Andreas.
Best GTAs in order:
San Andreas. It had the most stuff to do. Second would be GTA4 because how realistic it is...sometimes too realistic, thats why its my number 2 pick.
Grand Theft Auto III. San Andreas was good but I didn't like the character as much and a lot of the new features were just annoying (having to eat all of the time, having to keep working out to stay buff, defending your turf, etc)
1 and 2 were incredibly fun back in the day though. The first time playing the original was one of the most fun gaming experiences ever.
Vice city or San andreas are both my favourites
Vice city - has tons of style and a great atmosphere
San andreas - one of the funniest games I ever played (the truth is just..... brilliant)
GTA3- pretty good game but not as good
GTA4- a good game but I kinda expected more from it following VC and San Andreas
Vice city was my favourite, san andreas had alot to do but the world was too big and at times i felt detached from it. Also if you crahed your car in the middle of the forrest someplace you could walk forever before you could find another car. it was just a pain at times.
San Andreas was definitely a good game. Lots of things to do and the customization features were great. My personal favourite is probably GTA 2. Although not the most advanced game technically, it still brings back great memories. The multiplayer in that game is spectacular, so much fun. It's a hard choice, but I think I'll have to go with GTA 2.
GTA: London however, will get no love form me. What a piece of garbage.

When I played GTA (the original) on the PC, even then, I thought the graphics were outdated. I wanted to know a way to get the view behind the vehicle. On the PC around that time you had games like Carmageddon/Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now, Midtown Madness/MM 2, Motocross Madness/MM 2, Need For Speed (4 of them), Viper Racing, Forsaken, Interstate '82, Driver - games that let you be behind the vehicle, and sometimes behind the character. I viewed GTA 2 as just an addon/rehash of GTA - I felt like I had already played it.
For me, GTA III was what I wanted GTA to be, however my favorite was Vice City - I really enjoyed the music, the atmosphere, the voice acting, the variety of missions and vehicles.
San Andreas was playable, but I didn't find the "Gangsta" style as enjoyable - probably because the 80's had more of an impact.
I don't mind GTA IV, I'd call it a close 2nd behind VC. After IV, I'd put San Andreas, then GTA III, then GTA/GTA2/GTA London: 1969.

Yep I pretty much agree
GTA IV has too many problems for me. The car control sucks. The radio stations in that game are the pretty poor at best. The city has few memorable locations. The sex and girlfriends business just screams lonely nerd. The only thing that game has going for me is the online multiplayer, but even that is pretty disapointing.
My favourite remains GTA III because I loved the city, the story was pretty good. I loved the fact that the first island became a death trap part way through the game. I loved unlocking the tank after completing the game. Even though it had few official tracks, the music was great. I just loved that game through and through.
Vice City's city was just too small and San Andreas had too many pointless features like going to the gym to build your characters stats and having girlfriends.
San Andreas the map was just better and the story was good my favorite part about it was Las Venturas plenty of stuff to put over that side of the island. GTAIV I just didn't enjoy it the story and missions for me just got boring and dull the graphics were great but that's not what a game is all about it me it's gameplay and Niko wasn't that great of a character not forgeting your phone ringing all the time was annoying. I actually hope that Rockstar put Huang Lee from Chinatown Wars in a 3D game he was actually one of the best characters in the GTA series my opinion.
