Best: FFXII. Generic FF plot is secondary to awesome gameplay. Because let's face it, FF always has plots rife with enough cliches and abysmal character design to sink any RPG unless its gameplay is fantastic. Which, in FFXII, it is.
Worst: Oh dear god, FFX. I haven't played FFXIII, but X was a linear grind. The plot was hilarious, the characters (well, Wakka was okay) trite, and the battle system uninteresting.
Since people seem to be arguing about VII on the side, I will say that I found the dialogue and pretentious plot laughable (watch as a fanboy goes, "I FIND YOUR DIALOGUE AND PRETENTIOUS PLOT PRETENTIOUS"), but the Materia system was awesome and the characters themselves were a lot of fun to play as, even if their speeches and mopey whinging could be painful. It's a fantastic RPG. You never get bored, the battle system is simple but works well.
And to whoever-it-was that knocked IV, that game has its weaknesses. It's still the one one I've finished three times on three or for different systems.
keep in mind IV was one of the first real rpgs. they never had a choose your party option back then. it wasnt till 6 that appearedjsh020
RPGs back then DID allow you to choose your members, and contrary to your belief, it was not one of the 'first real RPGs'. It may be part of the most famous RPG series of all time, but certainly not particularly groundbreaking. The criminally forgotten Phantasy Star II predated FFIV by a few years, featured a better setting, and the ability to swap characters out in your party. For example, some could kill robots easily, and others were more effective against biomonsters. However, it also had a truncated translation (not exactly bad, just very...abbreviated) and literally 80% of the game is grinding to survive. Still totally worth checking out; it was the game that got me into RPGs. -shrug-
