Well I never played Halo wars but...For the singleplayer story alot of people said halo CE,for multiplayer Halo 2 and for overall features Halo 3.Halo 3 has Addicting multiplayer, 4 player Co-op and the video/Pic save features.Me personally because of the the features loved Halo 3 the most.
H3 then H2 then H1. Multiplayer was always fun but I care about single player and the level design got less repetitive with each game and that's what matters to me.
Halo Combat Evolved. It would also have the best multiplayer if it had XBL capabilities. Halo 2 and 3 were terrible IMO. I prefer the simple weapon selection and health system of the first one.
Out of Halo CE and Halo 2, CE hands down. LAN mutliplayer was far superior and the game just played better than 2. No fall damage in 2 was kind of nice, though.
Halo 3- I view it as the best because of the phenomenol multiplayer experience and because of the sheer polish the game has. Unlike something like GOW2, I've never had a moment in Halo 3 that I viewed as BS. No gamebreaking bugs, no glitches, quick matchmaking, and the such are just what make this game so good. Very well made.
Halo 1- My first multiplayer experience and quite a memorable one. The only reason I hold this gem behind Halo 3 is the lack of online (I know Xbox Live was before its time) and that the story was not as well established at the time.
Well not that I didn't think the first two Halo's were pretty awesome but I'd go with Halo 3 as my favourite. The campaign was very well done and fantastic playing it with 3 other players. The multiplayer was just as superb and addicting as anything else. The two things that really puts the game over the top was the totally cool Saved Film feature and the Forge level editor. It was just a really excellent game all around with really not much to fault about it. Halo Wars turned out to be quite a solid game as well and a very good addition to the franchise.
Halo CE is better in all categories. The multiplayer was fun and the single player was interesting. Halo 2 and 3 are just unbalanced in terms of multiplayer and the story just never picked up.

You know, the multi-player modes of Halo 2 and 3 are pretty similar...
True, but Halo 2 just lacks the polish that Halo 3 has. I shouldn't have used 'garbage', so I apologize in that regard. Still, while Halo 2 isen't really a bad game, it's nowhere near as good as it was made out to be when it first came out.
If they remake combat evolved with the same weapon balance and add online multiplayer and graphics, then we may just have game of the decade 2010--2020
About sums it up. CE was a magical experience for me. Halo 2 shattered my love for all things Halo. Halo 3 was fun and a pretty okay note to end on.
Also wanted to add, I personally like CE's multiplayer over Halo 3's, but in terms of polish and by today's standards, Halo 3's is very well done. Nothing beats 8 on 8 Blood Gulch CTF, though.
