Which Legacy Console Controller Was the Best In Your Opinion?

Mine was the SNES/PS1/PS2 controller (4 action buttons w/triggers). It just felt the most comfortable in my hands, the buttons were nicely placed and easy to reach, and there were enough buttons for varied controls. The original PSX and SNES controllers don't work so well for some 3D games, but I like 2D games better anyways. And PSX & PS2 did make analog controllers, so they work for games that really need it.

I'm gonna go with the SNES/PS style. So good they haven't had to change it (majorly)for like 15 years lol. The PS controller just feels right to me.

Honorable mentions include the Genesis controller (3 - button) for being super comfortble and built like a rock and the NES controller for nostalgia.

I like the PS1/PS2 and GEN/Sat controllers the best. I also like SNES but the controller is bit too small imo.

for 2D games, or fighting games, the "6 button" Mega Drive/Saturn controller is the best.

for FPS games and most other types of games, I prefer the PS1/2/3 controller.

The SNES and the Xbox Controller S. The SNES was the best 2D controller ever, and the Controller S was the best for 3D--it's analog sticks were far better than any Dual Shock pad, even the one out today.

Rather liked the PS 1, PS 2 and SNES controllers best. Thought they had just the right feel in my palms . Would prefer pads on the thumb buttons though.

The SNES/PS1/PS2 style was the best, no doubt about it. The Dualshock 1 and 2 are still the best console controllers ever.

Mega Drive/Genesis 3 button controller is my favourite to use, chunky and the most comfortable imo. And it looks ace. N64 ones are my favourite in terms of nostalgia and look, SNES one is pretty cool as well (the PAL look with the multi-coloured buttons rather than the American purple ones).

The Playstation/Ps2 original controllers are awesome and feel very precise and the best for overall gameplay.

I like the Xbox controller as well (s version in particular) Other than that I feel that the Tac-2 Joystick for the 8 bit computers (Atari/C-64 etc) gave an awesome arcade feeling and an incredibly accurate precision, but with only one button....

So, yeah, the Ps/Ps2

The NES and Master System controllers offer no advantages whatsoever over any other controllers except for joysticks, steering wheels, etc. But that's what I'm driving at here: it depends, on what kind of games you play.

Why is the SNES pad lumped together with the PlayStation controller(s)? Okay - well, the Dual Shock has analog sticks and the SNES pad doesn't. So the Dual Shock wins there. For 2D games in general I think that the Genesis model 2 pad is the most ideal.

Sega Dreamcast/XBox Style Controller, because thats what started the controller revolution and that's when the industry understood it was necessary for the consumers to have a controller they liked to put in their hands.

Toss up between SNES/Genesis controller, in my experience the PS1 controllers the analog sticks broke too easy. PS2 dualshock was fine.

For simplicity, NES controller was fine as well. NES advantage had an awkward joystick, much preferred the NES Turbo Controller.

I dunno who said the N64 controller was best, but whoever you are, you're insane, lol. I could never master that controller, it felt so awkward.

The worst controller for me has to be either the Atari 5200, N64, or the orignal Xbox controller. All of them are fine paperweights though. :)
