Anyway, I am a big fan of shooters and RPGs (dunno if shooters really go this far back on consoles), but I'll play anything worthwhile. I'm mainly interested in games that would take a long, long time to complete, and are overall fantastic. Which system is your favorite?

I know this is pretty vague and could start a war, but I figure this might be a decent launching platform. Thank you for your time. :)

Some random ones I can think of include NES, SNES, Dreamcast, Genesis, Atari 2600, PS2, Xbox, GameCube (already got one of those).

I have very fond memories of the SNES.

If you are looking for RPG's three of my favourite on the system are Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Secret of Mana. Super Mario RPG has agedbetter than the othertwo so if you can find it you should definetly pick it up.

Other than those rpg's the SNES has some very fantastic games. All of the 2d mario features, Donkey Kong Country, Finan Fantasy III(it's really VI), Mario Kart, a super old Starfox game(not sure if that was any good or not). Also if you like blizzard one of their first games Rock n Roll racing was released on the system. Oh and if you get an SNES you absolutely have to buy The legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. If you are looking for a long game it has 13 dungeons and two large overworlds.

If your a big fan of shooters and you don't have one already, I'd say spend that money on a PS3.

The quality of the shooters from the PS2 to the PS3 is like night and day.

You could probably play Black Ops or Medal of Honor or Battlefield 2 online for weeks or months without getting bored.

But if you're deadset on getting an older system, I'd go with a PS2, there's just such a huge varied library.

Yeah, with what you described it sounds like a PS2 or Xboxwould be your best bet. They havea ton of shooters and RPG's.

N64 has some great shooters, not so much on the RPG side.

NES, SNES have great RPG's just not so much on the shooter side.

PS1 has a mix like the PS2, but you can still play several PS2 games online, so if that is something you are interested in, then check it out. Plus the fact that PS2's and 3's both play PS1 games...

Also, a PS3 1st gen backward compatible can play all PS games, and Xbox 360's play a large portion of the Xbox library.

If you are dead set on retro (although I hesitate to call it that... still dont think it is, but whateva :P) I'd go PS2

If you are looking for new school with old school compatibility at an affordable price I'd go 360

If you are looking for new school with old school compatibility (only backward compatible plays PS2 games but all play PS1) and the best overall experience I would go with a backward compatible PS3. It might cost a little more, but worth the cash imo.

For RPG's and shooters your best bet is getting an Xbox if you like the Bioware type RPG. The Xbox has the best shooters(Halo, Far Cry, BLACK) and RPGS like Fable The Lost Chapters, Knights of The Old Republic, Jade Empire and Morrowind. If you are going to get an Xbox these days I would just get a 360 though.

oh darn thats tough , ,

theres snes ps1 n64 nes genesis id go with any of those, my expeirence with n64 snes and ps1 were good ones, genesis i just got one of those like in 08 got 60 ish games most sports but y a it has most of what snes has ne way

so ya if you know what sonic and streets of rage are - thats some key exclusives for sega genesis ,

dont ask me about jag or saturn -i only own 5 of those games and none of jag or neo geo etc

as far as new systems that have old school capabilities id get a wii , it plays gamecube then you can download nes snes n64 neo geo genesis c64 tg16 sms and vcarcade games , but not every good game is on there yet so id get a wii and one of the older systems or just the oldersystem ,

Thank you all very much -- now it's come down to the Retron 3 (Genesis, NES, SNES clone, apparently it's the best on the market), or the originals of those 3. I would get an Xbox or PS2, but for some reason those don't interest me as much as the older, 8-bit and 16-bit classics. :)

all depends on what your price range is , what kind of games you are interested in

if youre only interested in the 8 and 16 bit generations, then the only ones I can recommend are the Master System or the Mega Drive(Genesis), since those are the only ones I own)

if youre into RPGs, Id get the PS1 , the system has a very good RPG library, and you can find games very easily in general.

if youre into fighting and arcade games, Id go for a Saturn or a Dreamcast, both have alot of excellent fighting and arcade games , especially if youre willing to import.

now obviously , that doesn't mean those are the only good genres on any of those systems , but those are the best points about each system

regarding the clone systems, Im personally not a fan, as they usually give inferior picture and sound quality, but admittedly, it would be cheaper to get a clone that plays all 3 consoles, rather then getting the 3 systems seperatly

Well I would pick up the three separately, but the problem is even off from Ebay, the console is, let's face it, *old.* The chances of it busting out on me are seemingly higher than a brand-new clone, and the Retron 3 has gotten some excellent reviews and has been toted as the best clone on the market at the moment (one of the reviews by none other than Classic Game Room).

EDIT: My price range isn't terribly high -- one of the reasons I'm doing this at all is because lots of games -- and I mean LOTS OF GAMES -- are very cheap along with the systems themselves for this era. I don't want to go splurging a few hundred on a mint-condition limited-edition what have you imported from where have you built by who have you with something have you on the front.

the old cartridge systems are built like tanks, I would actually be more afraid that the flimsy clone would break down first. I mean heck there are still Atari 2600s that work fine, in fact alot of them do. not to mention you can't use a Mega CD or 32X with the clone systems. the price would be an issue though , and if youre not concerned about some games sounding somewhat off , then its ok.

Yes, this, everyone should play those three at least once in their life. Also, as he stated later, The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy VI. The SNES was a breeding ground for (IMO) the besr RPGs of all time. I never played it, but apparently Earthbound was fantastic, too. So many great games.

It really depends upon whether or not your intention is to simply play the games, or to actually own the vintage equiptment.

See, normally the two most obvious suggestions would be SNES or Genesis, but most of the best SNES games are available on the Wii's virtual console at a fraction of the original cartridge price (plus battery save files aren't an issue) andpractically theentire worthwhile Genesis lineup is available for $30 via "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" if you have a 360 or PS3.

That said, if your intention is to own a badass vintage console with fantastic games, and money isn't an issue, the SEGA SATURN is king.

Sicne you're looking for RPGs, here is your list:

  • Panzer Dragoon Saga
  • Shining Force III
  • Magic Knight Rayearth
  • Albert Odyssey
  • Shining Wisdom
  • Dragon Force
  • Legend of Oasis
  • Shining the Holy Ark
  • Virtual Hydlide
  • Dark Savior

i would go for the genesis.

evildead6789

Since you're an RPG fan, if you decide to go with the Genesis (a quality choice), don't bother with the basic models.

Get yourself a SEGA-CDX (has both Genesis and Sega-CD drives, without all the extra attachments and b.s.)

The get yourself the following games:

  • Shining Force
  • Shining Force II
  • Shining Force CD
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Vay
  • Popful Mail
  • Lunar Silver Star
  • Lunar Eternal Blue
  • Eye of the Beholder
  • Pier Solar
  • The Beggar Prince

the Wondermega is very expensive. if I were him I would buy a Mega Drive and Mega CD seperately.

I personally found a Mega Drive and Mega CD, as well as 6 games, all for £22.

I ended up giving my older Mega drive away.

Well, judging by your "Mega" nameplates, I'll assume you're UK?

They're not so bad over here, $120 will get you a SEGA-CDX with hookups, paddles et all, which is well worth it to not have all the different attachments, power sources, cables etc.

While you aren't going to find many shooters your best purchase will be a PS2 you would have access to the entire library of Playstation RPGs from both consoles, PS1 and 2.) There are many that will take a long time to a very long time, heck if you would get Persona 3 and 4 and Final Fantasy Tactics you would be looking at 300 hrs of game time and you would not even be unlocking all the content and abilities the games have to offer.

The Super Nintendo is my favorite video game system and in my opinion the best. I say if you're an RPG fan (such as myself) you can't go wrong with Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Illusion of Gaia, Lufia (Fortress of Doom/Rise of the Sinistrals) just to name a few.... check this out for more:

Seriously? LOL, please tell me you're not judging priced based on EBAY

Sure, if you want to overpay by a rediculous amount, yeah, I guess you could waste your money on ebay.

Of course, you could also just look around a bit, and find one like I did for a normal or modest price.

Just to get some thing straight and i hope i don't get banned from this because i'm only suggesting something legally But some classic games are abandonware, allthough i don't know which ones and for what consoles. that means you can copy and download them for free legally. I won't post sites because some i don't know if all are legal and i don't want to get banned. On the other hand some new systems support old games. Like the wii. Doesn't have the wii a whole snes & nes revival thingie going that you can download those games via your wii for wii points.

LOL, plus, if you've got the older rig (which I still also have somewhere around here) then you still have access to the 32X and Master System converter attachments aswell, so year, the older rig could be pretty sweet if you're going for pure bang-for-your-buck

LOL, plus, if you've got the older rig (which I still also have somewhere around here) then you still have access to the 32X and Master System converter attachments aswell, so year, the older rig could be pretty sweet if you're going for pure bang-for-your-buck

the master system converter would be awesome......if it wasnt for the fact I already own a Master System :P , original model 1 SMS too

I would go with the Playstation. It has a mix of all the game types you're looking for. It has some cool shooters like the old medal of honor games (I liked 'em a lot back in the day) and good RPGs like the Final Fantasy's. It's my favorite old console, and its cheap cheap cheap :)

I really don't know how to explain this.

I have the sudden urge to splurge on an old, classic gaming console and a ton of games for it. I'm not old enough to remember the SNES or whatnot, but I mean, nice to check out what was awesome back in the day, right?

Anyway, I am a big fan of shooters and RPGs (dunno if shooters really go this far back on consoles), but I'll play anything worthwhile. I'm mainly interested in games that would take a long, long time to complete, and are overall fantastic. Which system is your favorite?

I know this is pretty vague and could start a war, but I figure this might be a decent launching platform. Thank you for your time. :)

Some random ones I can think of include NES, SNES, Dreamcast, Genesis, Atari 2600, PS2, Xbox, GameCube (already got one of those).

I'd say PS2 is your best bet.

Playstation (PS1) sounds like a safe bet for you.

You'll find plenty of lengthy games.
