I just finished number 2 (finally) and even though its not a great step up in terms of game design from the first i think it was alot more refined and i liked it more, what do you think?

I'm playing through 2 right now (started a few days ago), and I'd say the two are pretty close. If I had to pick, I'd have to say the first one, just because I liked its environments more (although I've only seen the Agon Wastes so far, so I can't make a valid decision).

I thought the first had some cooler art design, and the light/dark thing wasn't as good as the beams in the first. But I thought the level design, amount of exploration, hidden stuff, and boss battles were better in the second.

Tough to pick which one I like more, but I'd probably go with the second.

The first one had a much larger impact because it was new but taken at face value they are both equally great games and two of the very best games of last generation if not all time

I think a lot of people are going to pick the first one, and deservedly so.  It was incredibly revolutionary, had really fresh gameplay and pretty awesome level design and puzzles.  That being said, Echoes doesn't get the credit it deserves.  The whole light/dark concept can seem tedious and tacked on at first, but when you actually get into the game you start to appreciate the level design which was taken to the next level with Echoes, as well as more depth to the story and environments (in my opinion).  While the Torvus Bog and Agon Wastes seem kinda boring at first glance they're really, really well designed.

I never actually finished Echoes all the way through, though... I lost my copy. :(

I think Prime was an incredible game. The atmosphere made it really feel like you were alone on this planet full of weird, unknown creatures. Echoes, on the other hand, had the bad (in my opinion) beam ammo system and the light/dark worlds, which got rather annoying. I never ended up finishing Echoes, as i really didn't like it.

I think Prime 1 was so much better.

nah one was better. 2 was more of the same, not to mention the final boss was freaking hard as heck. it's kinda like how twilight princess was the same as ocarina of time, except not as much so.

The first one was better because it had unlimited ammo, and less of a focus on combat. Also, switching between worlds in MP2 was annoying.

I like both but 2 was deeper and more challenging and so ended up as more satisfying. But one was obviously startlingly new.

I thought beam ammo was a good idea. Makes the original powershooter or what it's called again way more effective. Pluss you never really ran low on any of the ammo types. Need more ammo? Kill someone with the other gun, and you will get the right ammo.

While being more accomplished and all, the second game felt too much like a direct continution of the first one.

Eh, you just have to know what you're doing. I think I've beaten it with plenty of life left before. Metroid Prime (the creature) was boring and tedious to fight, in comparison. So many times you're just standing there and shooting, shooting, shooting... mash on A, mash on A, mash on A, on and on and on. Even more so on the hardest difficulty. And when it's in its original form, sometimes you have to wait such a long time for it to produce a phazon pool, all the while just staying in one place, alternating between standing there, doing nothing, and hopping over the energy attacks. I'd fight Emperor Ing over Metroid Prime any day.

I prefer the second game. The bosses are better (but the Boost Ball Ing is frustratingly difficult to kill), especially Dark Samus (previously known as Metroid Prime). And I like the atmosphere better.

It is a tough choice to make, but i'm going with MP2. I liked the bosses much more(even though i didn't really like the dark/light thing in most cases). Plus, the Sanctuary area of the game is insanely awesome.
