just play the number ones (including code veronica), the others even though they add a bit of story are not so important, more like spin offs.
The storyline in Resident Evil really isn't something to go nuts about, there are many different storylines and revolve more around characters than a large overarching plot IMO.
Resident Evil one, or rather REmake Gamecube is an excellent title and quite possibly the best in series behind 4. That's where it all begins and if you really want to immerse yourself into the RE storyline that's where you go. RE2 is also a great game, recommend playing that as well. Three is not so essential to storyline, but is a great game, Nemesis is just way too cool.
Code Veronica is my personal favorite, along with RE4, Claire Redfield and her brother star in this one. Overall I HIGHLY recommend Code Veronica and Re4. But you really can't go wrong with any of them. Just prepare to deal with archaic controls and tedious puzzles.
I'd skip 5 altogether, as it really is just an inferior version of 4. Unless you have a friend to play with, then its a blast.
Pretty much play RE1 (RE1 remake if you can),RE2,RE3,RE CVX and RE5 if you haven't. Everything else is meh except Outbreak 1-2 and RE Revelations.
Resident Evil Remake. If you have a Wii, it's available under "Resident Evil archives". Also on the Gamecube. Resident Evil 0 is also a pretty good game, but not necessary for the story.
Then Resident Evil 2, 3, Code Veronica, and then get a friend and play RE5. Resident Evil Revelations is also worth it. Aside from being the best RE in years, it also introduced a new plot point that might come into play in RE6, although unlikely. It'll probably be touched upon in future 3DS titles.
