Which throwback beat em up game was the best?

Shredder’s Revenge was my favourite.

Streets of Rage 4, 'cause I'm a huge fan of the first three Streets of Rage games; I even have a Streets of Rage poster in my room. It proves that beat 'em ups are not dead. You can still make a game like that and have success (not only in terms of getting good reviews, but also in having strong sales.)

My favorite Beat em' Up is Dragon's Crown.

Closely followed by Streets of Rage 4 & Fight n' Rage.

Shredders Revenge is a good throwback Beat em' Up but it's very mindless and mashy. Has zero depth. Which I suppose is much like the older Beat em' Ups. Shows Streets of Rage 2 was way ahead of its time. I feel the genre has come a long way since then; River City Girls 2 and Scott Pilgrim.. so many I could mention.

Between Shredder's Revenge and Streets of Rage 4 (the only ones I've played in the poll), SoR4 is way better.

SoR4 is one of the best, if not the best beat 'em up game made. Shredder's Revenge was too button mashy. When you can win by just mashing, I don't think the game is designed well.

Streets of rage 4 without doubt is the best. Shredders revenge is a close second.

SoR 4 is great, all three of these are top-tier.

I was always partial to the DnD arcade beat em ups. Those were awesome too.

Yeah, I'm kind of finding that out with Double Dragon Gaiden, and The Karate Kid: Street Rumble. Needless to say, I'm swinging a little outside of the strike zone. Still fun though.
