The only game I seem to be able to occasionally be great at is Call of Duty (and that's not saying much). Anyone else feel like they are utterly terrible when playing most online games? :P

The only 2 online games I'm good at are Uncharted 2 and Red Dead Redemption, although Red Dead Redemption doesn't matter anymore since everyone just glitches and becomes invincible in it now. *sigh*

Never played Red Dead online. Looksed cool, but never got around to it.
I did like my time with Uncharted 2, and didn't feel like I did too bad in it (the controls and movement just let me do what I want, as oppose to feeling restricted like in most games).
I completely feel for you man. I seem to be the most accomplished of my friends when it comes to 1P achievements and beating campaigns quickly, but get demolished at pvp. I've found that it helps when you practice one cheap strategy and use it over and over again, whether it be a certain gun at fps', or a certain combo on fighting games. But then noone has fun playing with you ;).

Probably the reason I usually don't do well in most online games. I hate exploiting game mechanics to win. Some people may find it fun, I feel like I cheated. Then again, it seems morals aren't something people seem to have in a competative formats, so I guess I shouldn't be suprised. :P

Red Dead Redemption is pretty fun, it's basically an open world free roam MP where you can run around with poose's of people and be outlaws and take over towns or you can be bounty hunters or go hunting and stuff.
But like I said, there is a glitch that EVERYONE knows how to do now (including me) and it makes you completely invincible so now it's ruined. At first it was kinda funny to make people angry but I don't do it anymore because it's unfair you know... Still the zombie mode is fun.

Pfft... don't even get me started.
They patch the DUMBEST stuff, like patching a harmless glitch that let's you get into a house if you shoot out the window. There isn't anything in the house that's worth while or anything that can cheat anyone or anything. It was just a cool place to hang out at. But they patch that. What they don't patch is the flying glicth that makes you a ghost so you can go into anything, or the glitch that takes you outside the border of the map, or the glicth that let's you get under the map where you can shoot other players above you.
They patch a stupid house that does no harm but let flying, outside the border, under the ground, and invincible glichtes run amok in the game. It's really stupid and makes no sense...

Ouch, lol
I think Im good at Mortal Kombat. Then I go online and get my butt handed to me. :(
TheHighWind
It's not your fault, the top players on that game only got there because they spam the same attack over and over again.
And the server sucks sometimes too
The Halo and Dirt series are the only two I've been passable at. I do okay in most FPS and non-sim driving games. I'm terrible at fighting, strategy and sim racers though. I get my butt handed to me in no time if I try playing one of those online. That's why I traded in the first Street Fighter I played and will never bother to play Mortal Kombat online at all. I also suck at Gears of War online, but the community put me off more than the skill barrier there.
I suck at a lot of them, but I can play a few ok... If I go to long without playing a game, I'll get worse.
I wouldn't say I'm too bad at online games actually. But, I'm not like super amazing. I'm pretty good at Uncharted 2. But, I don't really play online much anymore because its not really fun to me anymore.
I lose the majority of the time so I tend to stick with single player. I rather not have to spend hours into a game to get good enough to compete. That is why I admire those great at fighters but I rather put that effort into my career.

I think this is probably true for most gamers like the OP who think they're bad at online games. I bet more often than not, it's simply an issue of making the "investment" (or waste?) of time in order to get better at the game. This is especially true nowadays as games are getting increasingly more complex. Unless the OP has some sort of genetic limitation that prevents him from becoming a good player in online games, which I doubt is the case, it's simply an issue of spending more and more time to improve (which some people choose not to do for one reason or another).

You have a great point. I would never wish for a game to be dumbed down. Those who chose to invest the time should get rewarded. If I did put the effort into a game like I do my studies I believe I could be just as good. I just want to keep gaming as a hobby and not put more time in it than I already do.

Part of the reason I never seem to get much better at most online games is that I don't like using builds, character, or classes simply for the sole reason to win. I play for fun first and foremost, and most of the time the weapons or builds I choose are either low tier or just plain bad.
I never understood how someone could force themselves to min/max iweapons or builds for the sake of performance. I guess some people just like winning almost too much... :|
Well fighting games I'm bad at online, but that's just because I'm not very good at them in general. The only fps I just can't stand playing online is KZ2 and Warhawk, I just can't seem to get the hang of them. But that's why I have BC2, MW2 (though, it's impossible not to rank up in it since they basically walk you through it in the barracks), Crysis 2 (only played for about an hour so far since I just got it but it seems to be pretty cool), Madden, and a couple other games as my main ones for online and am looking forward to bringing BF3 online.
I'm absolutely terrible at fighting games. Other than that I'm usually about average but when it comes to fighters I just can't seem to do well. The only online games I'm actually very good at are RTS games. Once I figure out the units/buildings I tend to do very well without much practice.
i do good when i play halo, i used to be really good at cod mod 2 but i stopped playing. i suck at black ops because no matter what i do i always get killed by some homo sitting in a corner with a motion sensor.
Serious question---why would online playing be harder than playing offline?Dracula68As in single player story verses online competitive?
It's not necessarily harder, but playing against a real flesh-and-blood human being adds many more dimensions of fun that are absent from playing against an AI. For example, most modern chess games have AIs that are hard to beat, but when it comes to games in the FPS genre, for example, how could you ever compare an AI to a person? Yes, an AI might aim a little better in some instances (and might be programmed to know where you are), but AI is light-years behind the creativity and skill of a experienced HUMAN players. It's not much that online gaming is harder (which is generally the case), but that online gaming is so much more interesting because people are just that much more intelligent and make for more challenging opponents than an AI.Funny thing is i find most people i play against online in any game, sucks

A lot of online games take practice, but like in the case of FPS, if you get good at one, your likely to be good at most. -ArchAngeL-777-I disagree strongly with this statement. Different FPS games are quite different from one another. Yes, they share a general premise, but these days to be good at any FPS game online takes quite an investment of time - to learn the maps, to learn the timing, the learn all the options/features, etc.... Although I would agree that someone who is good at one FPS has the capability of being good at another, each different game still has a new learning curve.
Im decent at most online games except Gears of War and Counter Strike. I'm an embarassment to my team on Gears in most cases, but I'm REALLY bad at CS. It's my favorite online FPS though and I can't stop playing haha. Lots of angry CS gamers out there cursing at me for being on their team :P
For me is a matter of investment. I was really good in Resistance: Fall of Man because I played the hell of it, and in most racing games I can hold my own. But I don't even bother playing a fighting game in single player because I always lose let alone try online, lol.
