I grerw up playing these systems. But as a kid, I didn't really care which machine won the console war. Does anyone remember which one sold more?

If you just go by amount sold, then the PS1 easily won. Personally, I was never interested in the N64.
Sales apart, was there even a console war in that generation? PS1 and N64 hardly had any game in commonBlack_Knight_00
But if Rare was scooped up on the PSone well that could have changed things drastically.

Well you couldn't possibly make Goldeneye on the PS1. Besides, when Rare dumped Nintendo the went completely down the drain[QUOTE="EggVillain"][QUOTE="Black_Knight_00"]Sales apart, was there even a console war in that generation? PS1 and N64 hardly had any game in commonBlack_Knight_00

Well you couldn't possibly make Goldeneye on the PS1. Besides, when Rare dumped Nintendo the went completely down the drainNintendo sold Rare because they were no longer what they once were. Rare hemmoraged talent in the tail end of the N64 era and all of the GC era and as a result, in the GC era published a grand total of 1 game.
You know, the funny thing is, the PlayStation only came about from Nintendo's own pigheadedness. They refused to work with Sony during the development of the SNES CD-ROM add on, which then lead Sony to develop the device as a more powerful standalone console. Then, after not heeding countless developers' calls to make the N64 optical disc-based, they stuck to cartridges in turn driving up prices on their own games while simultaneous limiting the storage capacity for their games. Because of this, they lost their last good card to Sony, and that was Squaresoft's Final Fantasy VII. When that game released on the PlayStation, it opened a floodgate on Nintendo that they never had a chance of containing. If you ask me, Sony didn't win the war against the N64. Nintendo flatout conceded. JustPlainLucasVery good points. Without Nintendo voiding the agreement with Sony...the PS wouldn't have happened.
Nintendo selling off Rare was actually an incredibly smart move on their behalf. Considering they made a ridiculously amount of money from the deal, they were also laughing their asses off when the company did jack squat for Microsoft.Nintendo sold Rare because they were no longer what they once were. Like others have said, PS1. The N64 has stuff like Mario games and Super Smash Bros., though.BranKetraThe thing about Nintendo is that their core gamer demographic will always be large enough to support them. They may lose wars, but they're always smart enough to make money on their hardware from day one, and they always release quality first party software that sells well. I kinda have to laugh at people who keep saying Nintendo's doomed because they can't win their marketshare back. Nintendo's not going anywhere.

Nintendo is pretty good at innovation.

Nintendo sold their 49% share because Rare founders Chris and Tim Stamper already sold their 51% to Microsoft and Nintendo didn't want to share a studio with a competitor. Plus, Nintendo never like 1st party developers who sell out (see the Squaresoft incident in 1995)Please Log In to post.
