Madden 09 is for the 2008/2009 season, but notice that it's MLB 2K8 for this year because the season is only in 2008, and doesn't go into the new year. Plus, the games are released at the tail end of the year or in the summer most of the time. Finally, when it comes to the holidays, if you see the title having next year on it (Madden 09, for example), you're more likely to believe it's the newest one.
