Why are original XBOX's so expensive?

I was looking into getting and collecting sixth generation consoles because it might be my favorite, but I can't seem to find an original xbox for a reasonable price considering its old tech. Many are +$50 for all the hookups and a controller. Are they at this price because of their easy to hack and emulate on?

Because they are now collectables. Collectables cost a lot because they are worth that much. I see NES's go for $100

I agree, around 50 dollars is quite a nice price for an XBOX.

It's only going to get pricier as time goes on. For $50, stock up on them!

Hmm maybe I did not consider the fact that ps2 are going for the same price... It's just I should not have sold my xbox a few years ago because back then they were worth little to nothing but now they are worth alot more. It seems that there was a sharp uptick in the prices for Xboxs whereas the Ps2 and gamecube have gotten progessivley cheaper.

Are you shopping around online or in-person at stores (like Gamestop)? I bought my used original xbox at a second-hand video store for $30, with controller, cables, and all. It has a mfg. date from 2005, so if you buy one, make sure you pick a "newer" date.

I got an Xbox, all cables, three controllers and six games--all of which are actually good--for $50 a few months ago. I thought it was pretty reasonable. It is kind of hard to imagine people using them as media PCs is keeping the price up but maybe. Seems like you have a lot better options for HDTV for pretty cheap these days.

not expensive at all , Ive seen them go for £15-20 for just the plain model , limited edition or specially coloured ones cost more, but my crystal Xbox cost about £25 with games , if I remember correctly.

Won an ebay auction for a "like new" green Halo Xbox with 2 controllers, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4, Morrowind, Splinter Cell, Halo 1, Halo 2, Spiderman, and two other games for about $65. I would say $50 is reasonable as long as it looks "like new."

LOL at you people paying $50 for old systems! Go to thirft stores and yard sales! Youd be amazed at what you might find for incredibly low prices. Local Goodwill had a $15 Xbox and a $25 Xbox the other day, didnt get either because they had obviously been opened up (I could see all the screws on the bottom). Ive gotten 7 PS2s for $5-$25 apiece from thift stores. NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Gameboys, Kinects, good games, etc Ive found at these places.

Considering that the original Xbox cost $400.00 when it first launched. Paying $45.00 for a used one is reasonable. or if they are just over 50 dollars. A Snes goes for $60.00 at used games stores. Shop around if that is possible.

Buy one without the hookups, you can get the cords for cheap. I got my xbox for 11 bucks at value village. Picked up a couple 5 dollar baggies with controllers in them. And grabbed the cords later on amazon. They were pretty cheap.

I've seen them for around that price too, but funny enough this one Goodwill on the nicer end of town was trying to swindle someone into buying a used XBOX for $80. They had a Wii for $200 as well:roll:

I found this store called Games 4 Less in Fullerton, CA and they had almost every game console and games for the old consoles too! They even had Atari 2600s for sale at $80 and their NES systems were $55 (or somewhere around there). I plan on going back to that store and buying some classic consoles when I finally have the money.

That's funny you mentioned that. I went to the Games 4 Less in Santa Ana, CA and I saw they had the Neo Geo Pocket Color bundles for around $70 that I was interested in back in the day. It's not a terrible place, they do have pretty much everything you're looking for.

That's pretty pricey. I see Neo Geo Pocket Colors go for $25-$50 online, depending on condition and box & manual or not.

It's a bundle that includes 6 games. I think those bundles are no longer available. You can find NGP on ebay now for sure, a lot of the games however are not so cheap - complete box/manual/case.

I didn't realize it came with games. But even then, unless you're buying something ultra-rare, like Mega Man, the Neo Geo games are also dirt cheap. I got first-party titles like Metal Slug, King of Fighters, and SNK vs. Capcom for like $4 a piece. The Neo Geo is seriously one of the easiest and cheapest systems out there to collect for. That guy's price is a rip-off.

Check thrift stores. You might not find the complete system, hookups and all, but you can easily score a console. Check a couple thrifts here and there. That's where I get all my retro systems. Payed 10 bucks fro a complete and working gamecube, with the matching purple controller at a goodwill. Give it a shot man.

My thoughts exactly. I feel like a lot of the people on here are content with being ripped off when with just a tad bit more effort they could find a system for a lot cheaper at a Pawn Shop or thrift store. It's their money I guess.

JuanGrande386

Time is money. If I want something in particular, I can get in the car, drive to the thrift store, look through a pile of random game stuff, maybe find what I want, maybe get into the car again and go to another thrift store... Or I can drop some extra dough on eBay and have it show up on my doorstep in a week. I am not getting ripped off, I am paying someone else to go to the thrift store and find the working game consoles.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy going thrifting it's just that right now spending an extra couple twenties here and there puts me out a lot less than spending an evening shopping for video games.

My theory is that Microsoft bought every used xbox original and destroyed them all so people would have to buy a 360.

For an original XBox it sure is. I see them for $20-$30 all the time. I'm in the U.S., though, don't know how it is overseas with original XBoxes.

Well, maybe for that kind of console--but in terms of "money to burn" $50 isn't that much. If you want something old (even if it's crap) you'll sometimes have to shell out a premium.

Here in the UK, original Xboxes are in fact cheaper than used PS2s. Fat PS2s go for £20-30 while original Xboxes go for around £15-25 in my experience.

Console is understandable... but the games, why the heck is Hitman Blood Money still selling for 17 bucks in the stores I've been to! I seriously had to rip a butthole into the manager just to tell him "Look the game is on Xbox, and it's fairly old, so cut us a break here" My personal favorite is seeing Mortal Kombat Armageddon for 25 bucks, the nerve of some people...
