Why are the Playstation 3 commercials so ridiculous?

Haven't you seen them? They all have all these metallic objects flying everywhere, "macho" music in the background...and all these special effects for the games they advertise. Does it seems like they're taking it too far, like they want their machine to look "cool"? I can picture some little elementary school kids going "Dudes, I'm so cool because I got that machine in the commercials". Seriously, they need to tone them down, and they always totally exaggerate what the machine is capable of.

I don't really feel Console makers should show off how good and powerfuly their machine is. They should show off what games they have to offer. A console could be absolute terrible made out of wood and glue as long as it has better games then the over-priced high technological one which has no good games.

"...like they want their machine to look "cool"?" "I don't really feel Console makers should show off how good and powerfuly their machine is." I think you're missing one of the purposes of advertising. Yes they should put focus on how great the games are, but it's not all about that in the marketing world. Hyping the system IS to give the system a "cool" personna. Cool sells! It also tries to say that not only are the games of today great, but the games of tomorrow that they can't show you will also be great, because the system is great. Plus, Sony is working on a marketing campaign, just like X-Box does with the X-Box Live campaign, just like the Wii does with those 2 Japanese guys that drive around in the Smart Car. You don't have to like it, but it's good marketing.

I may be wrong here, but I think that's called advertisement, and call me crazy, but--isn't that the point?

They look cool if you look at it from the graphic designer side. It must have take a long time to get all those special effects in. The way the PS3 is advertised is not cool because it shows what can be played, but not how the games run on the console.

Agreed. I call Sony out for the continual mistakes they've made and fairly acknowledge their market situation, but I'll also give them credit for a really cool commercial. I can't explain why its so cool (well, whatever song that is, it really helps) but the marketing guys did their job.

I liked the ones from last holiday too, though. Well, except that baby one ..........

Eh, I thought it was cool. The first time I saw it I actually had the urge to go buy a PS3. I guess that's the magic of advertising. Plus the song is awesome.

The special effects are awesome, but the music just sounds like some garden variety numetal garbage. I think it might actually be Limp Bizkit themselves, or some generic wannabe, and why anyone would "wannabe" Fred Durst, including the man himself, is beyond me.

That aside, I think western advertisement stopped being about promoting actual features of any given product long ago. In fact, most of the commercials that actually stick with me are ones that I found to be funny/cool/cute/heartwarming/manipulative, but that could not actually remember what it was they were advertising! Not what I would call effective.

Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I bought anything because of a TV/magazine/banner ad. I tend to decide on or stumble across what I want through active and extensive research, and videogames and their hardware are no exception. Given how costly they tend to be nowadays, I can't really afford to do it any other way.

Well the ones that advertised the motion sensor control were a little farfetched....You know where there's some eggs on this flat surface, the controller tilts and the eggs hatch and a bunch of crows fly out of them....It seems like they're eggsagerating how exciting the motion controlling really is (at least for now, there aren't any good games for it until War Hawk). It seems like they're purely advertising the machine based on what it is instead of how well the games run, gameply footage, and whatnot... It just seems entirely "I AM THE MOST BADASS THING YOU'VE EVER SEEN. BUY ME".

Lol, yeah I know what you mean, I mean, why the hell is there octopus tentacles coming out of it? Unless the PS3 actually did that, I aint gettin it for it's price lol. I don't care if it's symbolising that the PS3 has all of that "inside" it. I WANT IT TO ACTUALLY DO THAT! I guess I have high standards lol.

I think the commercials are pretty good. The metallic object one you mention is only one out of many. The commercials for individual games are quite good.

I like it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than those cheeseball Wii commercials with that have grandpas, kids, moms, dads, groups, etc. playing the Wii with those Japanese salesmen guys at the ene with the Wii-mote saying, "Wii like to play." I can't believe they even stick Metroid Prime 3 in a commercial like that, ugh!

My question is why they always show Wii Sports, geez the game came out like a year ago and it's like a demo disc.

Their latest commericals are cool, they have intense rock music that panders to the 12 to 40 year old male demographic which stresses gaming. What's wrong with that?

Before they had crying dolls, eggs that explode into full grown ravens and other weird stuff that didn't actually make any sense. Or how about the White and Black PSP ads that were deemed racist.

Sony is doing things properly as of late, I think it's just your personal opinion.

Might I ask what you think about Enzyte commercials or Burger King or something else in that case?

The engineers back in Japan who designed the PS3 have done a fantastic job. It really is a well-built, powerful, and versatile machine. Unfortunately, the rest of the folks at Sony, including their execs and marketing department, are just plain incompetent and seem intent on making themselves look stupid.

God, I hated those dustball commercials!

But on topic, I think that PS3 has the best commercials of any system right now. The worst? Still PSP. That annoying guy in the "dude get your own" ads is the only thing worse than those talking dustballs.

I really like the ads that Sony are bringing out now. I love the new PS3 one with the rockin' music and morphing PS3 as it's a real adrenaline pumper. I really didn't like the first PS3 ads though with the baby doll, egg, and PS3 hovering in a white room. They were just kind of wierd and boring for me.

Same kind of deal with the new PSP ads doing the whole "Get your own" kind of thing. I find them to be kind of funny where the ones with the dustballs and squirrels were annoying to me.

Why are they made to be ridiculous? To get people to think and talk about them (any publicity is good publicity), it looks like it worked.

I like the one with the rock music where they actually SHOW the games. Sony has the games. I don't see why they hesitate so much on showing them. it is for the games by a console, after all.
