I honestly dont understand why turn based combat games get sold. I know that they arefull ofstory and all but i could never force myself to play one. Im not dissing you for liking them im just trying to find out why they are so popular? Personally, I have never played a Final Fantasy game. I know that it is some sort of a gaming sin but i just cant bring myself to play one! someone please clue me in on why these games are so popular???somedude16Tsk Tsk Tsk. Dissing a genre you haven't had the pleasure of playing. FF Tactics. I'm telling you, before you know it, you'll be thirty hours into it and enjoying every minute.
Every gamer can ask the exact same question of the genre they just don't get. I can do that for flight sims and most platform games.
But I'm an avid RPG gamer, and for the most part, turn-based RPGs are dying out very, very quickly. It's difficult to even find one these days. The FF series, the one place I could turn to for pure turn-based fun, has gone at least quasi-real-time in FF XII, and I can't remember the last time I played a NEW turn-based RPG since DQ VIII and the wonderful Suikoden titles. But I think Persona 3 is turn-based...
Anyway, my point remains- unfortunately, I don't think the turn-based RPG will last much longer. It's not what the new generation of "twitch gamers" wants.
Turn-based/RPGs or strategy/RPGs have been around LOOOONG before Final Fantasy or the console RPG. I think it started with table-top games like Dungeouns and Dragons pen-and-paper RPGs. I was never into these but I knew some friends who were. I think you take turns rolling dice to move, attack, etc. So that right there is where "turn-based role-playing was born."
Than Ultima came out for the CPU and than Japan got into it with Dragon Quest. I think that's how it started, but I may need to brush up on my gaming history a bit.
So it's more of a tradition and has a really huge historical legacy with all RPGs.
[QUOTE="BranKetra"]The same reason why chess is.maddog95376and Tetris.
Except Tetris isn't turn based and chess is far, far deeper than most turn-based RPGs. Not to be a hater, but most that come out you just attack with your best attack over and over or keep doing whatever the game makes you do to set it up. While doing this, you also have to devote a few turns to keep your party standing.
This isn't to say that there aren't fantastic turn-based RPGs. However, I think most of the reason why they are popular is because this kind of gameplay can be kinda fun when paired with great production values. Final Fantasy 7 for example had that active battle turn system thing going for it which made it seem a little more frentic while at the same time making everything look really cool. Just as you think getting a headshot is awesome, some people think that getting to level 99 and killing the end boss in one hit is awesome.
