Why do games always have "Press Start" at the begining?

I believe it's to prevent burn-in on televisions. It was originally in arcade games. When the game was idle, a demo reel would start playing so that a single image wouldn't be burned into the screen.

Yes, this is the reason there is a press start button. Besides, why wouldn't there be a press start button? How would you load a game, select multiple players, or any other such thing if there was no initial start menu?

And in DS games you touch the screen. And I think in Eyetoy you have to...wave your hands or something.

But there's no reason (appart to prevent burn in) to have to press start BEFORE the menu comes up. ;)

Good point. There is no such thing as a start button for the Wii anymore. Just a "Home" button to return to the Wii menu.

If the start menu popped up as soon as the game loads, there would be no need for pretty title screens and attract modes. The press start thing gives me a plaeasant sense of anticipation..

My feeling is that, you know, I would be pretty bummed out if I wanted to play a game, and I could never START it to begin with, don't you think?

Well, the burn-in doesnt really have an effect in there now, as modern TV's and LCD stuff dont get "burned" in AFAIK. I think its there today for setimental value/nostalgia, more than anything. Plus it can be kinda cool how neat some games do thier "start screen and demo reel".

My guess is that the "Press Start" command is a holdover from the coin-op days. Arcade games directed users to "Insert Coin" and then to "Press Start".

It also applies today to direct newer gamers (or less-serious gamers) towards beginning the game-- although, in many cases, another button (such as X on the PS controller) also work to move players along.

Yeah, could be to prevent burn in, could be straight tradition! Maybe gamers are just used to their start screens!

I think pressing start also means "ok I'm actually paying attention to the game now that the beginning credits have rolled"

I'd have to go with the theory that "press start" was just a replacement for "insert coin" and since has stuck.

As it is at demo kiosks it at least lets the passers by know the game really is playable rather than just some logo that will transition to some non playable videos.

so when you start what's the first thing you see!!! the makers and sponsers it some kind of advertisment they have. that's just my opinion. p.s that's why they have all there logos all over the screen when it say's PUSH START.

probably because it is a proper way to start a video game? Nothing really wrong with that.

For the same reason the playstation controller still has a "select" button on it. Its just a holdover from gaming's early days when such things actually had a function. I don't really buy the burn-in explanation since if that was true then games would do that whenever there was inactivity for a certain length of time anywhere in the game. And doing it only at the "Press Start" screen is stupid because just how many of you find yourself turning on a game only run off before even playing it? I say its just a remnant from back when arcade games used to get ported often to consoles and the devs just slapped in "Press Start" instead of "Insert Coin", or the dev's put in "Press Start" to give a game a more authentic arcade feel to it (since that was really big back before consoles caught up to and then surpassed arcade games).
