MKX is my first real fighting game experience and I think it's gameplay is incredibly deep and skill based. I haven't played SFV yet but I will.

you missed some quality fighting games of the past.
But the thing is with MK that, it is more about the gore than anything else, it was true for a long time but MK9 did revive the glory days of MKII
@Coco_pierrot:
I dont see that with MKX, though. Sure theres tons of gore but theres still, in my mind, solid fighting game mechanics. In fact, od say that fter youve seen every fatakaty, brutality and stage fatality then the gore is boring and inspires little to no response. For me, at this point, the game is far more about mastering my main than gore
Yeah the fighting mechanics are there and all you have to do is watch some competitive matches on youtube to find out. But I think it's not on the same level as street fighter. Personally I don't like how the block button takes care of attacks from both directions unlike street fighter where you have to block in the correct direction so cross ups are an important part of the game.
But I wouldn't call MKX a casual game because it is still extremely skill based and competitive.
@BboyStatix:
That seems fair to me. I'll be buying SFV whenever it gets a practice mode and single player vs mode. I like the art style and characters of MK more, When I was a kid I had very, very brief exposure to fighting games and it literally went, MK, Tekken, SF. And I honestly enjoyed SF the least (probably because my older cousin thrashed me in it). So, it's likely I'm biased.
I'm curious what you think about Tekken as compared to MK and SF?
I think it's primarily due to competitions.
Afterall there's been plenty of Street Fighter competitions throughout the 90ties and early 2000, while I can't say I've heard of a Mortal Kombat competition. As a result Street fighter is likely viewed as the more competetive and thus also a harder games as opposed to Mortal Kombat.
@mcguffin: Personally, I am a casual player. So what attracted me to MK was actually how great the characters looked and the tons and tons of content that the game offers. In fact I wasn't even concerned about how "deep" the fighting mechanics were. I was just interested in how good they looked and how flashy the combos were. Good thing that the game isn't just looks too because the gameplay is great.
SF takes time to get used to. I felt that way when sf4 came out and it got good reviews and I was the only one who didn't know what was so fun about it. What got me into buying it was definitely competitive videos. Those were amazing to watch. Btw even though the gameplay is absolutely incredible, I feel ripped off cuz there's so little content. Unless you love playing online all the time, don't buy this game yet. Also, the online even at rookie level can be pretty competitive so yeah. And btw the graphics are actually very good in SF. A different more cartoony art style but still looks fantastic imo. Characters like Cammy look awesome in this game.
As for Tekken, I really really dislike the excessive juggling in the game. And this is something I dislike in MK as well. I dislike their combo system and the fact that once they get the first hit in, you're going to take a huge combo and you spend a lot of time not being able to do anything about it. They are way too long. Combos in sf are usually short but sweet. But once again Tekken is another franchise I buy only because of its characters and single player content. The reveal of Nina Williams got me hyped up for the new one hehe. All in all, SF is the one I enjoyed playing online the most.
@BboyStatix: well in MK9 ( can't say about MKX ) you could break a combo if you are OK spending you Xray meter to do so.
@mcguffin: Well I've always been playing fighting game even before internet. But MK after MK3 always been seen as a gory game without too much going on. That was true until MK9 came out on PS3/360, they had a very deep combo system, fast and revived some of the cool stuff from MKII days. MKX, from what I've seen put a lot of time on the gore and the WOW factor so it feels like it is a regression from MK9.
Street Fighter well ... SFIV was a freight train when it came out, reviving the fighting scene that was almost dead at that point.
Tekken was very good during the PS1 days, Tekken 3 was the ultimate Tekken game, after that it was a painful slow death to me. Virtual Fighter did have a bigger impact back in the days but died a lot faster than Tekken. Then you have Dead Or Alive that while a good fighting game, it was plagued by stupid animation that turned the serie into a joke.
