Why do people say mouse and keyboard is better for FPS?

I personally find it very difficult to play any FPS on PC without a controller and always need to plug one in.

What are the advantages of using a keyboard? When I try to use one it's really hard to move accurately because you can only really move in 8 directions making it really predictable where you are going and you can't control the speed of your movement so you're always going full speed which is obviously very unrelistic. Also WASD seems really hard to use because you need 3 fingers to move as opposed to only your thumb on an analog stick.

Everyone says mouse is far better for aiming but I find the analog stick way more precise and intuitive rather than a clunky object to the right of your keyboard and it's really difficult to point and click on the enemy before they shoot you, but on consoles you don't have to aim as close to the enemy to kill them.

I just find it more comfortable to hold an ergonomically designed controller than have my hand splayed out across a huge plastic object with way more keys than needed for the game.

What's the reason why people prefer kb/m?

Aiming with a controller is clunky. It feels like your paralyzed from the waist up. Also the sensitivity just isn't there. You either turn it up and can't aim at anything or you lower it and take forever to turn around. That's why console games all use auto-aim. I don't get why people would want to play FPS games on a controller, feels terrible to me. Also any UI designed for use with a controller is typically way more menus than needed.

Play what you prefer though. That's the nice thing about PCs - all the input options.

It's objectively more accurate with more buttons, like hot-keys.

Games like Goldeneye and Halo worked because they essentially stripped away mechanics of PC focused FPS.

The original Doom and Doom 64 arguably worked even better as they had a forgivable auto-aim that dealt with depth.

Well certainly a mouse is undoubtedly better for precision and reaction times in an FPS. I think that OP kind of has a point when it comes to the keyboard though. For actual character movement it seems like an analog stick would be more fluid and intuitive.

Makes you wonder what it'd be like if they made a more advanced and ergonomic nunchuck accessory like the Wii had, only with more buttons for hotkeys, to use with a mouse. That way you could get the best of both worlds: the good aim of a mouse, and the character movement control of an analog controller.

Maybe they already make those, or perhaps it's a dumb idea. Would be interesting to see how it stacked up against kb/m though.

You can always use a mouse and this instead of a keyboard:

Honestly, I don't get this part. The mouse is for direction which gives far more than the 8 mentioned. There are also sprint and crawl keys in addition to the W key.

Wut? I think "the OP has never played an FPS on PC" is confirmed.

That being said, you're right-ish about the movement speed. Traditional control schemes allow for 2: run+walk. Sometimes it's sprint+run+walk, but it's not continuous like it could be with an analog

On the other hand, my experience is this is typically an illusion with controllers - I'm not sure I've played very many where running speed is truly continuous, and instead it's a step function involving, you guessed it, run-walk or sprint-run-walk stages depending on how far you've moved the analog. Often sprint is its own category involve clicking the analog down (hands down one of the WORST controller functions IMO - god it's awkward). In other words, not really different from the Keyboard scheme, and IMO worse when it comes to the click-sprint mapping

I feel sorry for people who got introduced to FPS games on console and think that a controller is better. I have been gaming on PC and console my whole life and FPS is way better on PC with a mouse and keyboard. The mouse aiming and instant access to weapons, inventory items, quick saves and other options with keys is incredible.

Sure, the analog stick for player movement speed is technically better, but I have never found myself wanting this feature while playing a FPS game on PC. Sprint/slow walk modifiers and the ability to tap the movement keys give you enough control where this is never an issue.

FPS with a controller is so inefficient and inferior. It is hard to take any gamer seriously if they honestly believe a controller is better than a mouse and keyboard for FPS.

Or you could use an analog keyboard

Mouse for aiming isn't even up for debate.

They are more precise, more accurate. There's a reason why 99 out of 100 times keyboard players destroy controller players.

Basically, its simple to take in a mouse and you can 180 flip in a millisecond when you realize what jerk is expected to turn to any area. Regardless of the affectability setting I can simply turn quicker with a mouse than controller.

This.

Personally, I love to use my Xbox One controller in single player games. When it comes to fast-paced multiplayer games, nothing beats Keyboard & Mouse.

Mouse drifts which is annoying. Joypad does not have this issue.

I played Modern Warfare 1 on PC with mouse and keyboard and it was slightly better than playing it on 360 controller.

I don't think you're even using a computer right now, in general just moving a mouse around is so much easier than fiddling with the analog stick. Or maybe you are just trolling? i'm seeing too many 1 or 2 day old accounts like these.

This. Analog stick for movement and mouse for aiming is the best combo IMO.
