I just read the review for Silent Hill: Book of Memories, and two of the three user comments were commenting about how the game is "crap" and "not Silent Hill." Well, my question is why does the fact that it's radically different from the main series instnatly make it crap? Isn't the entire purpose of a spinoff to take a different kind of gameplay type and apply it to an established series? Why don't people udnerstand this? They seem to think that just because it's not a part of the main series, it instnatly sucks. I don't understand. What are your thoughts on this?

People complain if a series changes (Final Fantasy, Resident Evil), and will also complain if the series stays the same (Pokemon, COD).

You're damned either way.

They tend to view them as inferior to the main series. However, people who started off playing a spin-off before playing the main series may see it differently.

Spin-offs tend to do things differently from main entries in the series, and for that reason people dislike them.

But that's the entire point of a spin off.

Because people love to b!tch and moan about everything. It's worse on the internet. Generally, people complain if a franchise is getting stale, "same old stuff", "why can't they improve?" "It should be like it used to."

-

Then it's,

"It's too new, and is different from the past. F* U, insert dev name here.!"

or

"They changed the camera like I wanted them to, but I don't like how they changed it."

-

I personally love getting spin offs. I am amped to Revengeance.

I don't know how many times I've read, "But it's not mgs!, it looks nothing like it!" on these forums. Maybe one day they'll get it.

Because they don't understand what's the purpose behind of making spin-off version and that's why they most likely won't accept changes. Still, it's better idea experimenting new formula on spin-off title than making changes on main title and ruin it.

Maybe so, but it's the reason people generally dislike them.

Since when did two vocal internet users determine attitudes towards spin offs as a whole? From what I've experienced, a lot of spin off efforts get a good amount of praise from their fan bases (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear, Mario, etc.) I've only seen a few that get really bad feedback.

A lot of the time, the spinoffs are of inferior quality when compared to the main games. Thus, they tend to come across a cheap ways to cash-in on a popular series/game. Examples include Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and Shadow the Hedgehog.

I gotta disagree with you there.

Cheesy girl power/Charlie Angels esque story aside, that was a quality game with a great battle system and a ton of sidequests. Gameplay wise, I liked it as much as I liked FF X. I wouldn't classify X-2 as a cheap cash in.

Can't forget that the ending to FFX was screaming some sort of follow-up anyway, so it would have been an injustice to not make X-2.

They're a bit misleading. Some people might expect something completely different and are disappointed. Also, people new to the franchise start craweling over and start thinking that this is the heart of the franchise. Then suddenly World of Warcraft is the real thing and much bigger than the original that was actually fun to play. ._.
