Why do they keep making videogames from movies?

I think everybody asks to ourselves at some point, but i don't know why they don't make a game from the source you know, like Batman Arkham asylum or Spiderman webs of shadow, have you played Iron man 2, i think you'd get more people to go watch the movie if you make a decent game that doesn't have anything to do with the movie but it's related to the characters, what do you think?

its so weird i have not bought ONE game based off of a movie. prince of persia is doing something really weird, they're making a game that's completely different from the movie but comes at around the same time.

It's simply merchandising.

It would be okay if there was quality time and effort put into it. That's usually not the case though since it's rushed to be released along with the movie for maximum exposure. By the sound of it, it doesn't seem reasonable given the fact it's too much for customers to spend, but there seem to be enough people who actually buys into it (mostly parents and kids who aren't knowledgable about these sort of things). And so it goes on...

Yeah like others have said it's cheaper and easier to just base it off of an already existing movie then having to create more unique material such as plot, scenarios, etc. I don't buy many straight up movie game tie-ins myself but if other people who buy these type of games are actually enjoying them then I guess there isn't really anything wrong with that. Honestly if I thought they were something I'd be more interested in buying then I don't know if it would really make much difference for me, I already have more games I want to purchase then I can afford or find time to play right now anyways.

Oddly enough, the vast majority of the Iron Man 2 videogame isn't related to the movie. But because it had to come out simultaneously witht he movie, it was rushed, and ended up sucking pretty badly. Hopefully, one day in the far flung future, Ol' Shellhead will have his own "Arkham Asylum" moment. But that seems so very far off. Which sucks for me, as a life long fan of Iron Man.

Because people who don't know any better(parents) buy it for their little kids.

Also a good point. That's why the majority of bad games reach the public a lot more and you see horrible titles go Platinum. It's also the prime reason that movie licensed games always release near the movie date, be they completed or not. One symbiotically promotes the other and sales will boost whether they provide quality or not. It's sad really.

The movies usually flop though, no? If it costs 100 mil to make, and only brings in 70--that's a loss. Not too mention the ad campaign likely costing a fortune as well. I do think its funny that they'll pick whatever game is popular at the time, and then release it years later when it isn't in the fans' mind as much.

I want a Legend of Zelda film made by Pixar.

Even though most videogame-to-movie adaptations do flop and really do suck major ass, there are some funny, cheesy moments in them. Like with the Street Fighter II live action movie, for instance (not The Legend Of Chun-Li flick - I have yet to see it, but from what I saw in the previews, it looks horrible). I can only think of ONE videogame movie that did really well and that was the original Mortal Kombat movie. Mario Bros, Double Dragon, etc - they were crap.

But the new Prince Of Persia movie, on the other hand, does show A LOT of promise!
