Both of course.
Also, for me, this is what gaming's always been. I've been playing Atari since I was 3 years old, so I grew up with this and I don't get stuck on judging a game for the amount of flash it brings.
Lucky for me, because I think in a lot of cases old games have a better gameplay experience than newer ones.
Less is more? In some cases perhaps, yes.
with all the awesome graphics that new games have, theres really something to be said for the old 8-16 bit games. its probably nostalgia y'know but sometimes i think theres nothing better than a game of ninja gaiden or dragonquest 3 or final fantasy 4 or super mario world, castlevania.... i could go on forever really. maybe it was one of those things where you had to be there when it was happening, i look back and i kinda see it as something special. prolly sounds corny but whatever :P i love my retro games
edit: it might be the fact that the games were consistently high quality for the time (for the most part, i can name more good snes games than bad ones) and the dev time wasnt years and years and millions of dollars with 300 person staff.... when 15 or 20 people got together to make a game it had a special charm to it, you could tell when the developers really loved doing it. now when i play a game it feels like what it is. someone drew a picture, someone else rendered a hi res 3d image and gave it to another programmer to program it into the game as close to the image as he can.... it feels more like faceless mega corporations making these games (and it is) when i play the retro games i never really get that sense. the credits are about a minute because they only have to thank about 20-30 people and the pubs...
Both. I mean, the point a game is to have fun. Obviously I can't say I don't get into new games as well but just because something is new doesn't mean it's more fun at all. If it comes down to Sonic 1, 2, 3, or the new ones in recent years I'll take the old ones any day. About $55 cheaper and a hell of a lot more fun.billyd5301I agree, I cant understand how people can say a game has "aged" badly, if a game was fun 20 years ago, its fun now, and sometimes you want a break from the ultra realistic though overly dark themes and graphics which are prevalent in today's games (one of the reasons I like Valkyria Chronicles is due to the fact its not moody and depressing, like say, Killzone 2)
I think most are a lot more fun like the Sonic games the Mega Drive/Genesis versions are by far better then the newer games as the current Sonic Team are poor compared to the original Sonic Team in the 16 bit era. Golden Axe I really like the original then Golden Axe Beast Rider came onto PS3 and XBOX 360 and it was awful talk about destroying a good series.
I think retro games have more to choose from as this current gen is mostly FPS war games and I've found most are pretty much the same and I can't really stand games now with dark depressing scenery is at least retro games have more colour to the game.
yes, and sometimes. New games are deeper and take more time. while I can quickly get into an older game and quit easier. Most retro games dont have save points, so when you die it says "game over" and thats it. newer games let you continue infinitely and/or save whenever u want (fallout3 is a good example). New games cost quite a bit more, but some rare old games do cost quite a bit of $$$. so cost isnt really the main issue. I have bought Ps3, Xbox360, and PSP games for less than what some NES games cost. and like many people I refer to the early 90s (sega genesis for me) as a more fun time in my life. so playing games like sonic 2 make me feel like a teenager again.
This is a key for me. During the PS2 era we saw so many more games coming out, which meant so many more GOOD games. It's absolutely impossible to play every good game that comes out when it's new. There are still tons of really great games on PS2/Xbox/GC that I haven't got to play yet. Just in the last month Battlefield BC 2, Mass Effect 2, and Tropico for this gen came out. 3 awesome games but that's $180. I can go get 3 "retro" games that are just as good though that I never had a chance to play for $5-$10 each and get the stuff like Mass Effect 2 in a few months when it's $20. I really can't understand buying new games that you don't have a chance to enjoy anyway.I have so many of them to play, so I continue to do so.. they seem to appeal to me a lot more than newer games, which seem a bit too generic.
Sides
I'm as old as the videogaming industry itself. So I remember when these Retrogames were new. Retro games are not always cheaper then the current stuff. As for better that depends. Videogames have always had great titles/franchises and crappy games as well. Better Yes and No, Cheaper depends. My favorite console of all time is still the SuperNintendo. Even though Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are way more powerful.
Because they're cheap primarily. A cheap game means I can play more games. If you pay $50.00 for a newer game and $5.00 for a retro game, that means you can try out ten retro games to the one newer game. I'd rather try out more games. Eventually all games will be retro games and I can wait.
I play some retro games because as a child I neglected to purchase many spectacular N64, Xbox and GAMECUBE games when they were released. Well, many of those are at a pretty decent price these days and they hold up really well. I'm just filling out my collections with completed games that I can add. This year I beat Otogi, Jet Set Radio Future and Star Wars Rogue Leader and they all hold up very well and are in fact better than any new games within their genres. So it's good to look to the past for some inspiration now and again.
Both, but mainly because they're fun and in some ways I like them a lot better than new games. New games have such complex story lines and there's so many more buttons you have to use.I still like to play new games but sometimes I just wanna play a game and not read a long story line and just stick to 4-button controls.
thats why there is the wii. if you can see past the bad stuff you find super great games. same for DSI think most are a lot more fun like the Sonic games the Mega Drive/Genesis versions are by far better then the newer games as the current Sonic Team are poor compared to the original Sonic Team in the 16 bit era. Golden Axe I really like the original then Golden Axe Beast Rider came onto PS3 and XBOX 360 and it was awful talk about destroying a good series.

They are better than a lot of next gen games in many cases and can be picked up for a fraction of the price.
The music and sounds were so original, so simple, unlike anything out there presently and a lot of games especially 80's games had a lot comedic value to them which made them so much fun (ex. Ski or Die, 720, Gunsmoke).Years back I had the opportunity to purchase about a dozen stand up arcade machine at a bankcruptcy sale (dirt cheap!!), but instead bought a Cadillac Eldorado that lasted about 4 yrs until the oil pan came apart on the freeway causing the engine to seize up on me. One of the worst decisions I've ever made.
Like them better than new games in most cases. Also, because I already own a ton from over the years, so I like to replay some of my favorites every now and then.
