Probably because it didn't live up to the impossible to reach hype among fans.

I don't know about other people, but I'm personally just tired of CoD games. A new one comes out every year, but there haven't even been any major changes to the gameplay formula since CoD4. Sadly it looks like CoD is going to go the way of Madden.

Well first of all "everyone" doesn't hate it. I think it's just a very vocal minority. I believe as a general rule of thumb that the more successful a game is, especially when it's both critically and comercially, then the more vocal it's critics will be.

Everyons doesn't hate black ops. When your popular there will always be someone out there to criticize you and it only gets worse as your populatiry grows. You should form your own opinion on the game, its a very good.

You have different types of gamers, all with different age brackets, years of experience of gaming etc.. Personally for me, the game is very rudimentary with takes back to old quakes then a new game. Everything feels old and bland. This could be from the 11+ years of gaming I have or that there have been several Cod's in last 2 years that play the same. Some people who might not have that pedigree or are more laid back might love the pick up and play run away shooting. Games is different base on taste.

It is not only popular to play, but also to hate. People hate stuff because they are popular, others also hate stuff simply because other people hate them. CoD's reputation got ruined by Modern Warfare 2. Other than that there are people sick of the lack of evolution in the series, short campaigns and unbalanced multiplayer. As for me I am indifferent to the series, I havent picked up any but I can see why people both love and hate them.

I think it has more to do with the way Activision is handling the franchise. They know it will sell, so they keep the same pace.

Idont hate it, but there are a few things I dont like.

Framerate issues, Spawn system, When the host quits most of the time the game will lose connection, and few other things.

I suppose you mean online. It's laggy, B52 and RC-XD are annoying, they ruined sniping to counter quickscoping but people still do it, footsteps are broken, people draw a penis as their emblem. On the other hand, private matches are the best thing I've ever played online, since you can customize every little detail of the match like no game I've ever seen before

I think the game is all right. It has frustrating aspects like every CoD game, and I guess some people cling to them. Specifically I'm thinking of RC-XDs, Nuketown, and campers (a perennial favorite). The campaign was actually quite good in my opinion though. Not as sensational/striking as Modern Warfare/2, but it was involving and wrapped up nicely. And uh...nothing's wrong with penis emblems. Right?

Its a great FPS, it gives you a decent single player campaign and a ton of multiplayer modes & a survival zombie mode. Some people may be growing tired of the franchise, but overall its a solid gaming experience. If you take advantage of all the different modes packaged in the game, you'll get hours and hours of playing time.

Okay, I have to ask...

I've seen a few posts in this thread referring to the old COD games (which I absolutely loved). I haven't played Black Ops yet, but for those who have: What's better, COD 1 or Black Ops? Referring specifically to multiplayer here.

It's not that they hate it, it's that they hate paying $60 for an expansion pack.

I bought Black Ops because it's what my brother and friends play, and they don't buy many games. I think a lot of people get pissed about Call of Duty because it puts money in Activision's pocket, and they have a reputation for **** on gamers. Not a whole lot you can do to motivate them to be less sleazy when they're making millions.

I never thought of it that way, but you're absolutely right. Every Call of Duty has just been a rehash of the last since CoD4. But it's not just CoD, I feel like a lot of games are going the way of Madden.

Because it's immensely popular, and anything that is incredibly popular receive a lot of backlash. But it depends whether or not, the game deserves the backlash. In Black Ops case, no. It's not a great game, but it isn't bad like a lot of internet rebels make it out to be. The game is quite good; the single-player is adequate and the multi-player is well-balance. However, it has flaws worth noting. Such as Sam Worthington's bizarre voice acting, over-use of slow motion, respawning enemies, poor maps, inconsistent hit-detection, and a godawful spawn-system.

Overall, it's a solid game. Not as good as CoD4, but MUCH better than Modern Warfare 2.
