Why don't videogames use motion blur very often?

I've found when a game uses a motion blur effect during fast movements. It really makes it look more realistic. If you've ever seen a CGI movie in theatres or on DVD, you'll notice that if it's a pro 3D animated feature, they use motion blur, or else the movements would just lack the realism. Because in real life, our eyes have motion blur, video cameras we use to record movies, have motion blur. Why don't games pick up on that? The only few games I've seen that have a motion blur effect are Crysis, Mass Effect and LittleBigPlanet. Two other games I can name that slightly use it are Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2. But I find it really helps make the movements seem less digital.

You can see motion blur here and in other videos if you look harder to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhKxex4RW3U

A cinematic takedown is always the most realistic takedown.

It's actually pretty popular among 30fps games. Off the top of my head you could add these games to your list:

  • Halo 3/ODST/Reach
  • Killzone 2/3
  • Portal/Portal 2/L4D/Half-Life Episode 3 (On PC anyway, not sure if they use it on consoles)
  • Gears of War 1/2/3
  • Lost Planet 1/2 + Resident Evil 5 + Dead Rising
  • Vanquish
  • God of War 3
  • Shadow of the Colossus (on PS2!)
  • Battlefield 3
  • GTA IV
  • Dirt series
  • Motorstorm series

Like any other graphical feature it costs some performance to use it, which is probably the #1 reason that some games won't use it. It can also be pretty distracting if done poorly.

Lots of games use motion blur, however, not many games use it well or make it noticeable.

I turn motion blur off in games whenever I can. It's an obnoxious effect.

I want to see more games making use of depth of field more than motion blur.

Motion blur is shocking. Gives me a headache every time it's on. The last game I got that had motion blur on was Witcher 2, turned that effect off straight away.

Despite it's performance hit, Motion blur is used quite often to hide low fps ironically

My eyes dont have motion blur thanks very much.....or no way near as much that is in games. I used to like it as it was a novalty, but now its just a crap addition to hide bad fps and graphics in some case, also its hard to catch things out of the corner of your eye if the whole god damn screen is blurry. So yea i either turn it right down or off.

I don't like blur.

I know it's "realistic" but if I wanted ultimate realism I'd join the army.

I want to see my games clearly.

I remember Grid having a ton of motion blur. I'd be driving down the track at over 100 mph and trying to figure out if that light colored thing in the distance was the road I was supposed to take or just some track-side object like a sign or something. But I couldn't because ti was all blurry.

I dunno, a lot of stuff can be done in movies because the thing you're supposed to be looking at is always in the center of the picture. That doesn't work so well in a game when you're trying to spot some sniper who's taking shots at you from behind cover 100 yards away and he's way over in the corner of the screen.
