It baffles me to this day that developers release games that receive scores 5 and below. I notice that Damnation scored a woeful 3.5 and it made me think, why release a game that is so obviously terrible?

Not every game can be an 'instant classic' but you would think that developers know what gamers want, games that score at least 7.5 to 8 on all review sites.

Well its been a while since i looked at "score" because most of the time the person that write about the game only think about it from her / his point of view.

Anyway 5 is average right? And i think they are way to happy to giveout high scores to alot of games.

Some reviewers tend to give games that are just for fun lower scores because they aren't groundbreaking games. I don't look at the score usually, I look at the review content, and what other people think of the game. The score is basically meaningless at this point. Using the other rating system (the averages) at least made it seem more fair than an arbitrary number.

In just about any context apart from reviewing scoring 5/10 would be seen as average, but with games this has moved up to 7/10. Now scoring 6/10 is somehow seen as the game being bad or majorly flawed, and that scoring 8/10 somehow means it is a great game. Given how many review sites have taken to simplifying their scoring to marks out of 5 it hides the inability of many reviewers to put their neck out and give it an accurate score. This is why I like to look and see how that reviewer compares whatever he is reviewing to other similar titles - does he think it is better of worse than title X? and that is more useful than a score out of 5 or 10.

Why are crappy movies made? Why are bad albums released? Why are bad books written? Why are bad electronics sold?

When devs are actually making the game they don't intend to make it crap thats just the way it ends up and so much money and time goes into them that they really haven't got a choice, after putting so much effort in you can't just scrap it, its a working product not a good product but a working one and thats enough to sell it and get some money off it so they don't go bust.

if you make a game, and it sucks, selling 50k copies is still better than none. you put in the development time, might as well try to recoup a few dollars.

Reviewers can lower the score because they want (IE Too Human, an actually good game) and because some people need to make games based on payroll, not because it's a "good game"

Just because Advent Rising is near the top of your favorite games list, it doesn't mean it's remotely close to a good game, it's not like Advent Rising got decent scores elsewhere, it averaged sub 70% scores. The whole "I found the game fun and therefore the scores are wrong" is a subjective argument that isn't particularly compelling because often a lot of games are poorly designed and have gameplay that are badly executedcompared to other games on the market. It's like the many garbage 3D sonic games that have been out in recent years, I'm sure many people like them, but they're crap, one might still be able to have fun with such games but it doesn't make the games not crap.

The point is, you should play games yourself and make opinions on them. Not listening to other people. Since they are so subjective.

One can't play every single game, let alone buy every single game, reviews are pretty good indication of whether a game is good or not, when you have games that are scoring 5s and 6s everywhere then you're probably not missing much skipping it. It really depends on whether you would rather spend money blindly and buy a crap game or spend the same money ona critically acclaimed gamethat provides a significantly higher quality experience.

Crap games come out largely because once the game is finished, the dev/publisher realize that they'll lose MORE money if they don't release it or start from scratch. So they throw the crap product onto store shelves and just recover whatever pitiful amount of cash that they can. It's better than nothing.

Not really. I like to think of a score as being the hook which pulls me into reading the review of a game which in turn allows me to make an informed decision about whether or not I should buy the game or not. I findgame scores to be very useful.

Thank you for saying what needed to be said without that smug smiley you always have. :D

But yeah, I totally agree that in an ideal world, I wouldn't have to trust reviewers. However, in this ideal world, I have unlimited free time and enough money to purchase every single game that comes out from Infamous to that Animal Crossing DSi clock.

Like it or not, the best indication of wether or not you will like a game is the review scores. It's not the only way to predict if you will like a game, but reading the reviews will give you the best idea most of the time.

Review scores are completely and totally irrelevant. That said, developer release bad games because they like money. If you didn't spend a lot making a game, you don't have to sell very many copies to turn a profit.

Video game journalists are corrupt to the bone. There's no point in taking their reviews seriously. I just rent the game before I buy it or hopefully there's a demo so I can try it out for free.

It takes time and money to make a good game and most devs don't have either one, so they release what they have ready when the deadline ticks. Also, reviewers can be biased, have prejudice, be fanboys in disguise, or downright corrupt. Never trust reviews as absolute truth.
