Golden Eye was revolutionnary at the time. It was one of the first if not the first FPS to be playable on consol ( yes I know DOOM and Castle Wolfstein had a consol version but let's face it it was crap and the controls were very limited ) because you could control the camera somewhat like on PC...

As for N64 game that still fun for people alive during that time. Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, Zelda Ocarina of time and Zelda Majora's Mask were the top in that time and still seen as the top

Of the N64 games Mario 64 and Doom 64 seem to be the ones that hold up best.

I have to agree with this, along with Ocarina of Time, but that had a remake on 3DS that is better in every way. Come to think of it Mario 64 got a DS remake as well. . . Hmm.

Either-way D00M 64> Golden Eye. At least from a single-player point of view. I've mostly heared Goldeneye was the Quake 3 of console gaming_

If you have played any FPS involving 2 analog sticks or keyboard/mouse, then don't bother. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were a big deal when they released. Both play like shit today.

@CRUSHER88: This is what I always assumed because Goldeneye was before my time, I like a lot of retro games but Goldeneye doesn't come across as a game that aged gracefully.

Goldeneye is not worth playing today, it has aged terribly and all the ways that the game revolutionized console FPS for the time have been expanded and refined 10 fold.

It was great for its time but the only reason to play it today is if you want to satisfy a curiousity about an important piece of video game history.

@clefdefa: The Nintendo 64 didn't get a port of the old D00M, they got a whole new game that was different in many ways, you should really look up D00M 64. It was developed by Midway from what I remember and not id Software.

You got to slap people; well I suppose it was a karate chop, but c'mon it looked like a lethal slap

Moonraker lasers

Mines

When your friend chose Oddjob as a character, so the three other friends ganged up on him because what kind of cheap POS chooses that tiny player character!?!??!! seriously he is the smallest target. EXPLOIT! BAN ODDJOB!

Golden Gun

That level with the secret door in the wall everyone knew about but people forgot about

You guys also forgot Perfect Dark on N64, it really outshine Goldeneye N64 and Perfect Dark felt like a revolution over Goldeneye of it's time.

I'm still playing lots of Retro games as it is and I do find myself enjoying playing some N64 games like Goldeneye, Majora's Mask (Despite I own the 3DS version) and even Mario Kart 64.

It was great when it came out but man did it age horrible. It's virtually unplayable today with horrible graphics and ultra low fps.

@davillain-: I've never played Perfect Dark so I wouldn't have a very good opinion on it.

However; goes without saying D00M 64 is still fun and could only be found on the N64. Outside of D00M3, the D00M series age well because they focus on amazing level design and complex puzzle solving, and that's a key to longevity in older FPS games.

Majora's Mask (Despite I own the 3DS version)

I'm not a fan of the Majora's Mask 3DS version, they made a lot of tweaks that made the game far worse, and could have been handled better. Unlike Ocarina, the 3DS Majora's Mask is the inferior version.

I'm not a big fan of putting up with older 3D games given the choice, but for gameplay purposes it's better to play the N64 version.

@RSM-HQ: Yes I know that, on the SNES they had a version and also on PSOne but they weren't as playable as Golden Eye was because of the limited controls for the movement.

@clefdefa: *Sigh* I must be phrasing it wrong. .

D00M 64 wasn't a port, it's a console exclusive sequel!

It's an entirely different game. Scripted events, traps, new enemy types.

I'll give you limited movement for even D64 however, such as basic aim control and lack of a jump option.

Yet. D00Ms depth was in complex level design and puzzles. That's what makes the games keep timeless, and was clearly a big focus for D00M64 and even D00M(2016)

@RSM-HQ: I know that, what I was saying is before Golden Eye. The FPS genre on consol was ridiculously bad because of the control including which can be attested by playing DOOM and Castle Wolfenstein on the SNES.

@clefdefa: Ah I think I'm understanding you now.

I don't really have an opinion of what it did for console gaming for its time, because I must have played all these N64 games at least a decade after they saw release.

Once Perfect Dark dropped, Goldeneye became obsolete.

The game has aged horribly. This is not an exaggeration. I tried playing it again a few years ago when I bought an original console with a bunch of games, and I just couldn't. FPS games have come way too far and the framerate is detestably awful.

To reiterate, Goldeneye might have been the perfect game at the time, but it is far, far, FAR from the best game of all time.

Nah... I think it was a 'you had to be there' thing. I found the game unplayable by today's standards the last time I tried to play it.

Goldeneye runs at a very poor framerate. Ugh.

Ocarina of Time still holds up to this day as one of the greatest games of all time.

At the time it was ground breaking and the most fun couch multiplayer game since mario kart. Now.....its pretty damn terrible when I tried to play it recently. Just like most first person games from that console era the controls are just terrible with todays standards. I will however never ever forget how fun that shit was when it was new. We would play 4 player split screen and laugh our asses off. Good memories.

Well I haven't played the game since 04/05 so it probably doesnt hold up that well, heck, it didn't hold up all that much when I last played it BUT you had to be there in the late 90s to understand the hype. It was the first truly comfortable console fps and it was the most fun I had playing mp outside of the smackdown games, Tekken and GT. Oh the memories!

I think the marketing definately helped goldeneye along with the fact that there was nothing quite like it at the time on console. For years it was the de facto birthday party game amongst my family and friends. It seemed like everyone with n64 just had goldeneye simple as that. It was the craze for years but nope it did not age well.

Short answer Yes

If you are able to overlook the dated graphics, then it´s still one of the better games.
