Why hasn't Sega made Shenmue HD yet?

Sega wastes of time making Yakudza HD for WiiU, instead of making Shenmue HD for all platforms, doesn't it? Hey, Sega, what is wrong with you? I bet it would be more profitable! Just give us your main hit in HD!

Nobody bought Shenmue or Shenmue II. Yakuza is a long running and profitable franchise. I love both series and I'm probably the biggest SEGA fan alive, but it's not hard to see why Yakuza games are still being made and Shenmue games aren't. SEGA lost boatloads of money on both Shenmue titles.

Made and left in japan, apparently. Yakuza 5 doesn't look any closer to coming out in the west. Stupid Sega, all they have to do is make a subtitles patch and we could import it from japan.

Damn shame. They better bring Yakuza 5 to the west.

We can only hope. Yakuza 1 came out 10 months later in the west, Yakuza 2 21 months later, Yakuza 3 13 months and Yakuza 4 12 months, so here's hoping the pattern will repeat again for Yakuza 5 this December/ next January.

It sold some 600.000 copies in japan, which is the average for the series. Yakuza 3 sold 330.000 copies outside of japan and Yakuza 4 250.000. What screwed us was Dead Souls, which no one bought because it sucked and sold 120.000 copies outside of japan. Of course Sega is made of fail, so instead of concluding that the game didn't sell because it was bad, it seems they thought it didn't sell because westerners don't want another Yakuza game. Hopefully that's not true.

There were rumors flying around a couple of years ago that Sega completed an HD port of Shenmue for XBLA but they've just been sitting on it. It's was never officially announced by Sega, so take that with a grain of salt.

Wow! I am really distressed reading your comments, guys! It seems most of people respect Shenmue less than the Yakuza series! No wonder Sega delays announcing the first one!

Because if they made shenmue HD maybe 10,000 people would buy it tops. They would lose money on the deal.

Yakuza is a completely different game that they make money on, so they make more of them.

Not trying to offend you but I cant even begin to know why you would get distressed over the opinions of a bunch of strangers on the internet. Just because you think its this holy grail of a game that you think everyone should praise and love as much as you doesnt mean everyone else will.

It was a good game during its time, but its irrelevant now to the majority of gamers.

It isn't about respect... it's about cold hard facts.

I love Shenmue, but it sold like garbage.

Not really. We are simply focusing on Yakuza because it's the most likely to come out. Unless they make a kickstarter, I think Shenmue 3 is off the table for good.

A Shenmue HD remake would be awesome, so would Shenmue III.

A lot of remakes have been released. People appreciate, respec and buy them. Just remember RE 1 or Shadow of Colossus! So why doesn't Sega make something like these ones?

The Shenmue series is my fav of all time. I want nothing more than Shenmue 3. I think the HD collection would do great on Vita/3DS.

Vintage gaming is best played on vintage TVs. On older CRT TVs, Shenmue's graphics now still look great.

Selling a million isn't considering selling? The more recent Yakuza games can't even claim that.

Shenmue 2 sold some 460.000 copies, Dreamcast and xbox combined, which is poor, considering it was a massive investment for Sega ($70 million in the year 2000). Yakuza averages on 600.000 copies, which is not spectacular but it's ok considering it's cheaper to make. Sega would probably be able to produce a Shenmue 3 with a smaller budget today, but Yu Suzuki would have to be really convincing in order to talk management into investing into it after the massive loss of the second game.

You don't think that the low sales might have something to do with shifting to 3rd party status and dividing your fanbase up and releasing the game on a system that did not attract the kind of gamers that would want to play Shenmue? Also, the $70 million claim is BS. http://www.destructoid.com/yu-suzuki-teases-shenmue-3-at-gdc-though-not-guaranteed-195502.phtml It was $47 million for the first one, and that included making a lot of assets that were intended to be used in later games. If you've got a definitive number for just Shenmue 2, I'd like to see your evidence. Furthermore, quit trying to throw out a red herring and stay on topic. We're talking about sales, not how much each game cost to make.

I correct myself: $70 million were invested or ready to be invested in total. Doesn't really matter though, since the game was unprofitable regardless of the exact budget figures. It'd be nice to have a new Shenmue, but unless the demand of the market shifts I doubt we'll see it anytime soon.

it would depend on how big the script is(as well as cultural differences)  and if they believe that that would be worth the short. you might want to read on this about localization. since you ask and all.

polygon

there was also another one from either akys or xseed regarding localization, but I can't find it. it could be this one though

If money is the problem they could always crowdfund it. People would give a dollar to fund localization.
