Mostly because I'm not in the next-gen era of videogames. I still have an original Xbox and don't plan on getting a 360 until maybe 2 years later. It's a complicated situation and I would love to have a 360 right now, but I still got many games to finish and buy for the Xbox. Yes, there are still loads of Xbox games (Phantom Dust, Psi Ops, SC: Double Agent, Dreamfall, Fatal Frame 2, Raze's Hell, Hitman 2, etc.) that are good that I haven't yet played, even though support is dead.

I don't feel guilty for calling the generation a next-gen one. This is next-gen, because it's mostly next-gen graphics and have created almost infinite amount of possibilities for developers. Of course, that doesn't come cheap, that's why most developers are jumping ship to the next-gen Wii armada with lower costs and still unique gameplay (ok, the minigame compilations are getting a little old :P).

Do YOU feel guilty about calling this generation "Next-Gen"??? Should you?

No, because fools think you can slap a magic wand (more wiggle waggle than deliberate motions) with gimpy graphics and last generation games on a new box and call it next gen.

To me, the 360 and PS3 are still next gen, not merely in terms of Graphics (but there is no question there), but in terms of online capability, new physics and AI scripts, and just generally better games.

I still have that wow factor when I put in something like Heavenly Sword, Dead Rising, Gears of War for instance.

My answer may not be the same reason as yours, but I have no problem calling it "next gen" still.

It's next-gen because it's the next series of consoles to follow the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. That is what constitutes a generation.

It's next-gen (as opposed to "this gen" implying a generational transition) because you still can't get all three systems by simply walking into a store with the money - when Wii can be picked up like that, the transition will complete and it'll become "this gen."

The "Wii Shortage" stopped a good while ago...

Maybe not at Gamestop. But go to Target, Best Buy, Walmart, they all have em.

Indeed. I was in EB Games several days ago getting my PSP and they had at least 5 or 6 of them in the front window and more in the store.

Gamestop has a shortage of everything. But then most "hardcore gamers" always shop there regardless. Chances are you go to Target, you might actually see a new release like Bioshock on sale for 49.99 instead (real example).

Anyways, shortage only exists at Gamestop still. That phase is over.

Just because you're stuck in last gen doesn't mean you should refer to current gen as next gen. :P

Hell, being a PC gamer, I've been in "next-gen" since 2004.

I vote we change it from "next" and "current" to a color-based system. If the PSOne and Dreamcast were "Blue Gen", the PS2 and Xbox were "Teal Gen" and so this is "Green Gen".

We may soon run out of colors, but that's when we add stripes and/or polka-dots.

You're kind of right. Last gen had some major technical innovations. Now it's just graphics and some physic stuff. MGS2, GTAIII, RE4, HL2, etc. Now it's not even that much different from last gen, except of course, "Teh HD 1080p upscale! ZOMG!".

It'll be "next-gen" until we find out something about the ACTUAL next generation of consoles. PS4, Xbox^3, and the Nii.

The whole "next-gen" thing is a pathetic marketting strategy created by consoles.

I offer three steps to be happy (and better):

1. Learn to custom build a PC.
2. Build a decent gaming PC ($300-500?)
3. Be happy (granted you have Windows XP)!

I call it "current gen" because support for the older consoles has pretty much died down (although not completely.) The only new games coming out now for the "last gen" consoles are sports games, and they're just the same every year with updated rosters. Everything new is being developed for the 360, PS3, or Wii. That's why I call this generation of consoles "current gen."

Some games are definite signs of next-gen games I would expect. Like mostly open-world games like Crackdown where there's barely any loading times and one of the best draw distances ever. Halo 3 has massive environments, tons of enemies, and loads of action-packed encounters, not to mention a great atmosphere to boot. Bioshock would've been nothing if it weren't for the graphical bells and whistles, lighting, sound design, and of course, art design.

I'd say Earth Defense Force is next-gen too, but some people might laugh :P. Oh, and Dead Rising with more than a 1000 zombies at the same time. I can't accept Gears being next-gen in design at all though, just in graphics. Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect could show the true potential of next-gen worlds. Just because I don't have a 360, doesn't mean I'm in the know-how. I leech off my friend's 360 as much as I can .

Mine was around $600 total and I can max out Call of Duty 4 and ... well, all of the recent/latest games. If you custom build rather than spending $1,000, you'll save a helluva lot of money (more so than getting a console, actually).

I still call it "next-gen" too, mainly because there's so much untapped potential still left in the"new" consoles. Once developers have reached a certain level, i'll be happy to start calling it "current-gen". I feel that time will come around 2009, when we see Resident Evil 5 and Final Fantasy XIII.

This has annoyed me for some time.

Xbox 360 has been out for a long time, PS3 and Wii for long enough.
They are NOT "Next Gen" any longer they are current generation systems.
PS2 Xbox (1) are LAST GENERATION. They have been replaced!! by this new generation of systems!!
I would be fine with Latest Generation or evenThe NewGeneration.

" This is the Next Generation of gaming consoles"
I'm sorry but that ended when the third one to join that group came out.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Wii are the CURRENT GENERATION.

It's marketing bs to make the current sound fresh.

Here is a concept....

We live in the now
what we have now is current
what comes next is the future.

This is what they want you to feel about this current generation.
That it is the future.
It's not.
The future is not yet defined.

Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii were Next Gen right up until they became standard which they now are.

What comes after next?
The answer is nothing .
The future will always be the future and you can never get past it! You can never get to the future because when you get to it, it becomes now and yet it's still there, the future always remains.

This current generation of gamming systems has the title Next Gen. That's all it is. A title.

~edit~

I would like to add that it's only truly "Next Generation" for Microsoft (who coined the term) since this is their second system. For Sony it's thethird and Nintendo its what, foruth? fifth? I forget.

Availability in my area is at about 20% odds right now - meaning a 20% chance of consoles being available anywhere in town, not just at any given store.

I couldn't possibly be happy with such a lack of Japanese content and a system that will only give me two years of use before having to be upgraded/replaced.

Does it really matter in the slightest? As long as everyone gets what we mean, does it matter if we call it current- or next-generation?

That's fine and dandy but the PC is like any other platform and has limitations regarding software availability. If I want to play Mass Effect, Halo 3, VF5, Heavenly Sword, etc. it won't be on a PC this holiday season.

Sorry, but PC gaming doesn't give you access to everything and it really isn't the solution you're advocating.

Umm, no.:|

Get a couple GB of RAM and a DX 10 video card which can be had for under $300. Only a $500 card will suffice, eh? No, just no.
