Why is it that while the PS2 still lives the original X-BOX has died away?

In my opinion the PS2's presence amongst this time of PS3 AND XBOX360 shows the great games upon which its foundations have been laid upon. Whats your opinion? Do you completely disagree with the statement in the title?

better range of games? better marketing? this puzzles me also as the original xbox was both more powerful and newer than the PS2, when it comes down to it though, i think its simply because microsoft yanked it off the market for the 360 to take its place and sony slowly fased the PS2 out and slowly (still is really) fased in the PS3. all of a sudden there were no xbox games available, and there are still new PS2 games to be bought TODAY. microsoft stuffed it

The PS2 was the better console and also had the better games overall.

Also the fact that Microsoft themselves killed off their original Xbox when they released the 360 has something to do with it. :)

I know that its just a way of making us pay more money to microsoft :( and don't get me wrong, microsoft is great, but the xbox was a great console, and VERY alike the xbox 360, and the xbox currently has more games, it's a shame that Microsoft is not producing anymore games

I posted something like this a while back. It's amazing that MS would kill off the Xbox, it was a good system and had some good games. Yet now it's gone and the PS2 is still out there making money and still getting good games made for it. I think MS shot themselves in the foot on this one.

i too am impressed with the PS2's constant flow of new releases already well into 2008. It'll die out eventually but it's exceeding expectations. The XBOX in comparison seems to have dropped the ball, but in reality, it lasted about as long as everyone figured it might. Also, consider that the 360 has been out an entire year longer.

Microsoft pretty much killed the old Xbox to move on to the 360... Sony just kept producing PS2s and PS2 games.

Probably because MS stopped supporting the Xbox. Instead, you get Xbox games on Marketplace.

and dont forget that the ps2 killed the xbox 360 for years before the ps3 came out.but if you look at it they though the xbox would last longer cause it had a more capable online but then they realized they had no games and ps2 just kept droping hit after hit.if ya ask me naruto ultimate ninja series kills anything in xbox history both consoles.

Because of two things - Great amount of Ps2 exclusives, and fact that sony still produces Ps2 even now in 2008, while Microsoft stoped supporting its system some time ago, and there weren't as many as good exclusive games on X-box;)

MS should have kept the Xbox going for a while before the released the 360. If you jump into the game you got to watch what others are doing. This will be the slow death for the 360 as time goes on.

i think sony realized that with its gigantic install base of ps2's and the fact that people are STILL BUYING THEM, it wouldn't be terribly smart to just turn off that flow of money. though it is slowly being phased out (which saddens me) im sure i will keep my ps2 and games for MANY years as i have quite a few great games (50 ish)

The PlayStation 2 is quite possibly the greatest game console ever created. The XBOX was just another console on the market. Sony is still making money off the PS2, while the XBOX was losing money for Microsoft, so one continues to be supported and the other dies.

Main reason: Microsoft let the Xbox die.

Microsoft and Nintendo chose to stop supporting their previous systems upon release of the Xbox 360 and Wii (and prior to release as well), while Sony continued to support the PS2. Only now is PlayStation 2 support starting to slow down.

Sony will keep it alive right up until it becomes unprofitable. If you recall the ps1 was still being produced and some games were still made awhile after the ps2 came out.

Microsoft treated original Xbox like a red-headed step child. It's sad cuz I love my xbox. At the Gamestop near me, there is almost half of an entire wall dedicated to new and used ps2 games. The xbox games take up just one side of a rack in the back of the store. :?

IMO Microsoft abandoned the XBOX because it is completely no match to the awesome games on the PS2. And besides, most xbox titles are multiplats. GTA:SA was even a time-exclusive title to the PS2.

First of all is that Microsoft themselves made the switch from Xbox to Xbox 360 pretty fast and never looked back. To them, the Xbox 360 is out now and the Xbox is a thing of the past. Sony is still trying to phase it out though they aren't going to push it out if there is still a big crowd still gaming on it. (The original PlayStation had games coming up until 2004 on the system, like FIFA Soccer 2005, for example) The PlayStation 2 was a casual console and it had a lot of titles that kept the casual gamers playing it, whereas the Xbox was directed towards the hardcore audience and thus never gained as much attention (and since many hardcore gamers move to the next generation pretty fast as well). In addition, many of the games were actually multi-platform, typically the other platform being the PlayStation 2, so developers just dropped the Xbox as well and simply created a PlayStation 2 version. The biggest reason, though, was Microsoft themselves.

its part marketing ploy, part common sense.

the xbox360 was released a while before the ps3 so they had a while to discontinue games bufore the ps3 was even released. also, xbox games werent selling near as well as ps2 games, the ps2 console and games outsold all of the next gen systems by far for a year or so it would have been and still is a stupid idea for sony to discontinue the ps2

It makes you kind of wonder how much could MS still be making if it still supported the Xbox along with the 360. That's why the PS kept making money even after the PS2 was released, just like the PS2 will keep making money even with the PS3 already out. This is the same mistake Nintendo made going from the SNES to the N64 and the fact that you couldn't play SNES games with the N64 system when it came out and that something that made a lot of parents mad.

***warning, i will restate plenty of old information to some people, but it may be some new info to others***

First as I see it, the ps2 is only a zombie of a console now. it's not like Sony is releasing any GOOD new games for the ps2 at all. Everyone knows the past couple years the ps2 has been basically dead. But SONY (unlike MS) owns the rights to all of the ps2 hardware, so they can keep producing it if they wish.

I read the previous posts and it doesnt look that you guys know that MS CAN NOT produce the original xbox anymore. well at least the video card part. in case you didnt know MS used Nvidia as the video card in the xbox. then years back Nvidia stopped making the chip. so M$ stopped production on the xbox when they ran out of the chips. and now they have a contract with Nvidia's competitor ATI. To create an Xbox using an outdated ATI chip would not make sense. So they only make the Xbox360 now. See link below for some of the info.

http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=4902

hope this cleared up things for some of you.

oh and besides all this i said above. I dont think M$ even got production costs down enough on the Xbox to even pull a profit on each unit sold. While sony on the other hand, makes this (cheap) slim ps2 that is way easy to produce and sells for a profit. if the ps2 was as bulky and complex as the xbox, they wouldn't keep making it.

PS2 is the top-salled console of all history, not for nothing

hugh library of great games, some of the best ever made for every genere, cheap price, dvd player, etc

where i live the 7th generation consoles are incredibly expensive, so well all stick in the 6th for a while

How can you say the PS2 is a zombie of a system? It's not Sony releashing the games it the companies and there are a lot of good games coming out for the PS2. MS should have taken note how Sony did things when it released the PS2 and how they kept the PS out on the market. Then they should have worked out a game plane to do the same thing.

120 million userbase Vs. 24 million userbase

Sony has a large base of users that are still gaming on a PS2 that have not transitioned to the PS3 and Sony wants to be able to continue to sell to to that market as long as it can.

Much like Nintendo continued to support NES well into the SNES days as the NES had a respectable 80 million user base.

Microsoft cut its teeth with Xbox, made a lot of mistakes and then cut the cord and started on the 360. With such a small userbase its not that much of a surprise, how long after Wii was released did Nintendo stop supporting GC?

I think it's because the PS2 is just so much better than the Xbox. I mean, let's face it, the only good exclusive for the Xbox was Halo/Halo 2. The PS2 has had so many, Soul Calibur 3, Metal Gear Solid, God Of War/God Of War 2, Devil May Cry (up until the newest one). The list goes on and on, there are just so many better games on the PS2 than on the Xbox and especially on the Gamecube. The PS2 will live on for who knows how long, meanwhile the other consoles only live on...in our hearts. Well, not in my heart, I only care about the PS2, I don't care about the other last gen consoles.

My first question, why is anyone surprised that there are primarily PS2 opinions in this thread? This messageboard is basically a PS2 forum now, with mainly their posters who have suffocated alot of others away. My second question, why is a system wars thread in this forum? Read the guidelines about the forum.
